Food and Dining in Hue: Authentic Flavors Proven by Mr.Hotsia
When talking about Hue (Huế) in Vietnam, one thing I, Mr.Hotsia, must say you shouldn't miss is the “local food.” This city is not known for pho like Hanoi or noodle soup like Hoi An, but it offers hot noodle soup with a specific type of noodle calledMior mì, eaten hot and flavorful especially in winter, particularly in January when Hue is cold enough to crave warmth. Sipping hot broth with chewy noodles is a small happiness I found on this trip.
The price for a bowl of noodles is about 15,000-20,000 dong, or no more than 30 Thai baht, which is very cheap compared to the taste. I once ate two bowls in one meal because the deliciousness and satisfying feeling like this is hard to find elsewhere in Vietnam.
Rice with Curry – A Simple Main Meal in Hue
For someone like me, Mr.Hotsia, who relies mainly on steamed rice, rice with curry in Hue is another must-have dish. I found many rice with curry shops offering plates for only 20 baht each, with many choices including pork, fish, and chicken, making every meal in Hue easy and delicious without hassle. This is the charm of Hue that I like because besides the food being tasty, the accommodation is also affordable (for those interested in lodging, try readingHotels, Lodging, Guesthouses in Huethat I have recommended before)
Local Vietnamese Desserts – Familiar Yet New Flavors
After noodles and rice with curry, I, Mr.Hotsia, did not miss trying local desserts that many provinces in Vietnam share, especially desserts made with flour, sago, red beans, soybeans, topped with coconut milk and sweet syrup, similar to Thai desserts at home. The price is only 7 baht per cup, a price common among Vietnamese people. I like it because it’s not overly sweet and gives a warm feeling like eating Thai desserts but with a different aroma and texture.
Vietnamese Coffee – Strong Black Coffee You Must Try
Talking about Hue, you can’t skip Vietnamese coffee. Coffee in Hue costs only 7 baht per cup. It’s drip coffee with a strong concentration. If you drink it with too much hot water, it becomes diluted and not tasty. I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend ordering “cà phê đen cứng đờng cứng sữa,” which means black coffee without sugar or milk. If you want to add sweetness and milk, order “một cà phê đờng sữa,” where “một” means “one.” Remember these to order like a local Vietnamese and truly taste authentic Hue coffee.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle Through Eating in Hue
When I, Mr.Hotsia, stroll around Hue, especially in the evening by the Perfume River, the atmosphere of sitting down to eat noodles or sip coffee with local desserts is very harmonious.Night Strolling in HueYou will see people sitting by the river near the Perfume River Bridge, which is beautifully lit with alternating colors. This is a scene I really like. Besides enjoying delicious and cheap food, you also get to experience the simple yet uniquely charming lifestyle of Hue people.
Dong Ba Market is another spot where I, Mr.Hotsia, spent time exploring many local foods, including fresh ingredients that Vietnamese people use daily. Many vendors here can speak Thai, which makes it warm and convenient to choose food and souvenirs by yourself.
Connecting with Hue and Travel Routes
Getting to Hue is not difficult. I, Mr.Hotsia, once tried takingthe train from Hanoi and Vinh to Huewhich is a beautiful route and an experience worth trying for those who want to truly feel the local atmosphere. Additionally, in Hue city, there are important tourist sites such asHue Imperial CityandThien Mu Pagodawhich I recommend visiting after enjoying local food.
Summary
For me, Mr.Hotsia, food and dining in Hue are the heart of this trip. Hot mì noodles with just the right spiciness, affordable rice with curry, familiar yet distinctive desserts, and strong Vietnamese coffee in every cup—all make Hue not just a World Heritage city but a city alive in every bite and every evening by the Perfume River. I recommend that if you come to Hue, don’t forget to try these local foods and stroll around the city atmosphere together. I guarantee you will have a unique experience.
