Restaurant guide in Huế by mr.hotsia
When talking about Huế in Vietnam, many may know it as a World Heritage city with the ancient palace of the Nguyễn dynasty as a key highlight. But for mr.hotsia, Huế is not only about history. The food here is just as impressive. Especially when trying local eateries, you’ll discover the true flavors of Huế.
Among the Vietnamese dishes I’ve tried, Huế has a unique character different from Hanoi or Hội An. Here, you won’t find Hanoi-style pho or Hội An-style noodle soups. Instead, they serve hot noodle soup using noodles called “mì” (Mi). These mì noodles have a perfect chewy softness. Hot noodle soup in Huế’s chilly January winter is mr.hotsia’s favorite because it’s not only delicious but also instantly warms the body.
The noodle prices in Huế are very cheap, around 20-30 baht only. Two bowls are just right for a satisfying meal without spending much. For those who want something simple and Thai-friendly, besides noodles, Huế also offers rice with curry dishes sold at about 20 baht per plate, with options like pork, fish, chicken, and many more. Especially near the Perfume River where I often stay, there are many rice curry and noodle shops to choose from. Some days I order repeatedly because they are so cheap and delicious that I can’t forget them.
Desserts here are equally charming. Vietnamese sweets that mr.hotsia likes include many similar to Thai desserts, such as those with flour, sago, red beans, soybeans, topped with coconut milk and syrup. Anyone who loves Thai desserts and isn’t afraid of calories must try these. I guarantee such flavors are hard to find in Thailand.
Night Atmosphere and Food Spots Recommended by mr.hotsia
If you arrive in Huế in the evening, don’t miss a walk along the Perfume River. Around 6:00-8:00 PM, the Perfume River bridge lights up with colorful alternating lights. Young Vietnamese couples sit by the river creating a warm atmosphere. On the opposite side of the bridge, there are billboards and colorful lights reflecting beautifully on the water, making mr.hotsia stop to take photos every time I visit.
Along the Perfume River, vendors sell food and souvenirs, but not too many to be overwhelming. This natural vibe is what I love most. Although it’s not a big market like others, it allows you to truly experience local life. Especially when walking to nearby accommodations, you’ll find fresh beer shops priced under 10 baht, perfect for chilling and chatting with tourists from many countries, adding great color to your trip.
Recommended Restaurants by mr.hotsia You Shouldn’t Miss
From mr.hotsia’s experience, Huế has many delicious and affordable local restaurants. I will recommend those easy to reach in the city center and near popular accommodations.
- Hot Noodle Soup with Mì Noodles- A small shop selling authentic Huế mì noodle soup with chewy noodles, flavorful broth, generous toppings, and affordable prices. Perfect for breakfast or dinner after visiting the palace.
- Street Rice with Curry- Near Dong Ba Market, there are many rice curry shops. mr.hotsia likes those with grilled pork and grilled fish menus, with flavors that Thai people really enjoy.
- Grilled Button Squid- A highly recommended grilled seafood dish. If you want to try authentic Vietnamese exotic food, the grilled button squid shop at the night market is a must-try. (Watch the clipVietnamese Grilled Button Squidfor your craving)
- Vietnamese Chicken Biryani- I found this dish in a small shop favored by locals. It’s tender, fragrant with spices, and budget-friendly. (Recommended clipVietnamese Chicken Biryani)
I encourage you to walk and eat around Dong Ba Market and the Perfume River. Besides enjoying delicious food, you’ll also see the real lifestyle of Huế people, which is different from dining in fancy restaurants or arranged tours. mr.hotsia believes that eating local food is the best way to truly understand and experience a city.
Eating and Traveling Tips in Huế with mr.hotsia
An important point mr.hotsia wants to share is that Huế is a city with very cheap food and accommodation, so you don’t have to worry much about your budget. There are many accommodations, especially guesthouses around 300 baht per night with air conditioning, hot water, and strong WIFI. (Read reviewsHotels, Accommodations, Guesthouses in Huếfor more) Plus, you can easily walk from your accommodation to the ancient palace and Dong Ba Market.
For travelers interested in the night atmosphere, I recommend taking an early evening walk along the Perfume River and its bridge around 6:00 – 8:00 PM. There, you’ll find beautiful colorful lights and a chill atmosphere not to be missed. (Read about the night atmosphere atNight Walks in Huế)
