Vinh Moc Tunnels: An underground experience in the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to explore the Vinh Moc Tunnels, one of the most impressive historical tourist sites in Huế Province, Vietnam. This is not the Cu Chi Tunnels, so don't get confused. The Vinh Moc Tunnels belong to the people of Vinh Moc village in Quang Tri Province, dug as a true war shelter. Cu Chi is near Ho Chi Minh City and was used by Viet Minh soldiers during the guerrilla war.

I traveled with a DMZ tour, the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam, which took us to both the Khe Sanh area and the Vinh Moc Tunnels. The DMZ is actually a demilitarized area around the Ben Hai River, about 10 kilometers wide. Instead of peace, it became one of the fiercest battlefields in the Vietnam War.

Vinh Moc village is about 7.5 kilometers from the Ben Hai River, with part of the village inside the DMZ. The villagers had to live closely connected to the long, complex tunnels they dug themselves, which took nearly two years to complete. They lived inside for six full years to avoid heavy air attacks. I walked into the tunnels for just a few minutes and already felt claustrophobic and had difficulty breathing. I truly admire the patience and bravery of the local people here.

What touched me even more was that 17 children were born inside these tunnels. I was very fortunate to meet one of those children who guided me through the tunnels. The conditions inside made it impossible for these children to speak normally due to lack of fresh air and sunlight, but they lived there until the war ended. It reflects the pain and memories that should never be forgotten.

Traveling from Huế to Vinh Moc Tunnels

Visiting the Vinh Moc Tunnels is very convenient. I left from Huế city, the capital of Thua Thien-Huế Province. Besides many attractions like the ancient Imperial City of Huế, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Huế is also a great base for traveling to historic battlefields like the Vinh Moc Tunnels.

If anyone wants to stroll around Huế before or after visiting the tunnels, I recommendNight walking tour in HuếIn the evening from about 6:00 to 8:00 PM, the atmosphere along the Perfume River is beautiful with colorful lights on the bridges, and young locals relaxing. It’s a warm and peaceful vibe I really enjoyed. Afterwards, you can try local food in Huế. The food here is affordable and very delicious.Food and dining in HuếThere are many dishes I loved, such as hot noodle soup different from Hanoi’s pho, and curry rice plates costing less than 20 baht each.

History of the Vinh Moc Tunnels

The Vinh Moc Tunnels are not just ordinary underground passages but a complete underground village with bedrooms, kitchens, classrooms, and delivery rooms built to help villagers survive the war. The tunnel’s depth made it impossible for American soldiers to destroy it, no matter how many heavy bombs were dropped. The villagers had to live carefully and conserve resources.

I walked along the winding paths through various halls, seeing handprints and writings on the walls still preserved. I felt like I traveled back in time to truly experience the courage and pain of the people from that era. It’s not just a tourist site but a profound historical lesson.

Tips and impressions from mr.hotsia

If you plan to visit Huế, don’t forget to set aside time to visit the Vinh Moc Tunnels. Besides learning about the war, you will see the lifestyle and resilience of the Vietnamese people here.

For this kind of trip, prepare comfortable shoes and breathable clothes because inside the tunnels it can feel stuffy and hot. But it’s definitely a unique experience you won’t find elsewhere.

After visiting the tunnels, I recommend relaxing back in Huế city. Try walking along the Perfume River in the evening or stay in the areas I suggest.Hotels, accommodations, guesthouses in HuếAffordable prices, convenient travel, and strong internet so you can share your experiences immediately.
