The Thai Dam Market in Dien Bien Phu, a city that Thai people understand and feel close to

When talking about Dien Bien Phu, many might recall the historic battlefield or even the Thai movie"Escape from Dien Bien Phu Hell Camp"which was once famous. But for me, mr.hotsia, Dien Bien Phu is not just about history. It is also a city with a large Thai Dam community, a group that speaks Thai fluently and lives warmly and uniquely in this northern Vietnam land.

During my visit to Dien Bien Phu, I had the chance to stroll through two interesting Thai Dam markets. The first market is not far from the river bridge; just cross the bridge and turn left at the street corner to find it. The second market is near the city bus station; from the bus station, cross the bridge and turn right into an alley about 300 meters to reach the other market. Interestingly, both markets have many Thai Dam vendors selling their goods, creating a familiar atmosphere that made me feel like I was back home.

The Charm of the Thai Dam Market in Dien Bien Phu

This market doesn’t focus on selling rare or exotic items like typical tourist markets. The true charm lies in the lively conversations and fun bargaining, an exchange that goes beyond money to culture and friendship. I remember arriving at the first market near the bridge around 6 a.m., where the atmosphere was bustling with Thai Dam vendors waking early to prepare their goods. The laughter and Thai conversations were truly heartwarming.

As for the riverside market, there’s no need to rush. I recommend visiting a bit later in the morning to better observe the local lifestyle. Each vendor sets up stalls selling fresh produce, dried goods, and homemade local dishes. It’s a great opportunity to taste authentic Vietnamese flavors up close, such as Vietnamese Chicken Biryani or the distinctive Nem Fang. The Thai Dam People in Dien Bien Phu: Lifestyle and Culture to Know

As a Thai traveler who has visited here many times, I, mr.hotsia, have deeply experienced the Thai Dam people, known in Vietnamese as "Tai Lam," an ethnic group blending Thai and Lao Song cultures. The Thai Dam still strongly preserve their traditional culture, such as the beautiful and distinctive high hair bun and traditional attire that combines elegance with simplicity.

Once, I got a haircut at a Thai Dam barber shop in downtown Dien Bien Phu. Talking with the owner and customers, it was clear they warmly welcomed Thai tourists like us, speaking Thai fluently, bargaining skillfully, and sometimes inviting us to their homes for meals. This feeling was truly like coming home. For those interested in the Thai Dam lifestyle in Dien Bien Phu, I recommend reading my articleThe Capital of the Thai Dam People, Dien Bien Phuwhich I wrote to give a clearer picture.

Travel and Interesting Connecting Itineraries

For travelers interested in visiting Dien Bien Phu, I recommend the route I personally used: crossing the border from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, through the Huay Thoai checkpoint in Bokeo Province, Laos, then taking a vehicle to Xay District in Oudomxay Province, staying there one night before continuing to Khoa town and finally reaching Dien Bien Phu. This route allows you to fully experience the lifestyle and nature of the Thai Dam and Lao Song people. (Detailed route information can be found inTraveling Dien Bien Phu)

After visiting Dien Bien Phu, many plan to continue to Sapa, a popular route for travelers who love mountains and cool weather. There is a daily mini-van service from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa, departing around 6:30 a.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Dien Bien Phu bus station. For more details, I have written about it inTraveling from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa.

Atmosphere and Impressions from the Market and Dien Bien Phu City

I remember when I first arrived in Dien Bien Phu, the city felt peaceful and warm. Most people here are Thai Dam who speak Thai fluently, which made bargaining with vendors at the market easy and comfortable. I also got to taste local dishes like Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid, which is only found in northern Vietnamese markets. (If you like squid, check out the videoVietnamese Grilled Button Squidthat I recorded.) The flavors here are a balanced mix of sour, sweet, and salty, different from Thai food but equally delicious and rich.

Accommodation in Dien Bien Phu offers a variety of options, from hotels to budget guesthouses. I, mr.hotsia, have stayed at a guesthouse near the market that was affordable and very convenient, making it easy to explore the market and city during free time.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, Dien Bien Phu is not just a historic city known to Thai people but a destination full of diverse cultures and the warm, friendly lifestyle of the Thai Dam people. The Thai Dam market here is an experience not to be missed because you will feel the friendliness, enjoy fun bargaining, and taste authentic local dishes that are hard to find elsewhere.

If you have time, I recommend spending at least 1-2 days exploring Dien Bien Phu to walk the markets, observe local life, and then continue to other towns like Sapa or Xela, each with its own charm and stories worth following.

Remember that traveling to Dien Bien Phu is convenient from Thailand via the Chiang Khong checkpoint. For more information about attractions and travel in this area, you can read my articles atTraveling Dien Bien PhuandBus from Dien Bien Phu to Xela.

I wish everyone a joyful journey and an open heart to new experiences in this land where the Thai Dam people live harmoniously with nature and culture.
Best wishes from mr.hotsia
