Food and dining in Đắk Lắk, the coffee capital of Vietnam
When talking about Đắk Lắk Province or Buon Ma Thuot City, many people might think of coffee first because this place is consideredthe true coffee capital of the world.mr.hotsia has personally experienced the atmosphere of this city up close. Many coffee shops are beautifully decorated, offering a wide variety of high-quality coffee menus, perfect for serious coffee lovers. But for those visiting Đắk Lắk who want to try local food as well, mr.hotsia would like to share experiences from the streets and restaurants that I have tried.
Although this city is the center of coffee cultivation in Vietnam, the streets are not filled with street food stalls like other cities in Vietnam. Instead, you will see many coffee shops lined up. My typical breakfast experience here isbeef bone pho, which is pho made with beef bone broth. The taste is mild and fragrant with authentic Vietnamese spices, not as greasy as you might think. For lunch and dinner in Đắk Lắk, the focus is on grilled pork rice and fried chicken rice. I tried these dishes at a restaurant next to my hotel, MAI ANH, which is adjacent to Coop Mart. The food was clean, fresh, and very tasty, especially the fried chicken rice, locally called “Gà Roti,” so delicious that I had to come back for several meals.
The atmosphere of restaurants and markets in Buon Ma Thuot City
When it comes to food spots in Buon Ma Thuot city, mr.hotsia recommends taking a walk around the Tank Monument area downtown. This is a tourist zone with many restaurants and bars, including a night market that opens in the evening for a fun stroll and tasting snacks. Here you can findauthentic nem nuong (grilled pork sausage)at many restaurants. I have tried several and liked Nem Thanh Van at 20 Ly Thuong Kiet, at the entrance of the city’s accommodation zone. The hot grilled pork here is fresh, and the dipping sauce and fresh vegetables served together are well balanced and delicious. The nem nuong here is different from what I have eaten in Thailand because the rice paper used is thin sheets that don’t need soaking before eating, giving a softer and fresher texture.
For those staying near Coop Mart like me, I recommend going up to the second floor of the food court in the mall. There are many curry rice dishes to choose from, both savory and sweet, as well as fresh smoothies at affordable prices and very clean. It’s perfect for those who want an easy and comfortable meal without going out to find food. Additionally, there is a fried chicken shop in KFC style with equally good taste, making many of my dinners here end with satisfying and effortless enjoyment.
A unique lifestyle of eating and coffee
If you visitBuon Ma Thuot, you will see that people here drink coffee almost all day long—from morning, late morning, afternoon, evening, to night. Coffee shops in this city are not like ordinary coffee shops because most are stylishly decorated with music and atmospheres varying by shop. I like to walk around and try shops that look busy to get the best coffee taste that is truly popular among locals.
Besides coffee, the local breakfast dish beef bone pho is another menu I recommend trying because it reflects the simple yet profound lifestyle and food culture of the Central Highlands people of Vietnam.
Tips for food travelers
mr.hotsia suggests that if you want to experience the authentic taste of Đắk Lắk, you should research and ask locals about famous restaurants in each area. But if you prefer not to travel far or want an easy meal, the food court in Coop Mart is a good option. Most importantly, it is very affordable and clean.
And if you want to eat authentic nem nuong like mr.hotsia, you should come to the Tank Monument area downtown. There are many nem nuong restaurants to choose from, with a good atmosphere and delicious traditional flavors just like I have tasted.Authentic Vietnamese Nem Nuonghere is considered one of the must-try dishes.
