The Coffee Capital of the World at Đắk Lắk, Vietnam
When talking about a place that I, mr.hotsia, feel is the coffee center of Vietnam and could be called the coffee capital of the world, it has to be “Buon Ma Thuot.”Buon Ma Thuotin Đắk Lắk Province. This place is not only the city with the largest coffee plantations in Vietnam but also the city that harvests coffee beans at the highest altitude above sea level in the world.
I arrived here with excitement because I know that Vietnamese coffee exported worldwide originates from Đắk Lắk. Coffee beans grown by farmers in every district of this province have unique quality and flavor. This is why the Buon Ma Thuot coffee brandBuon Ma Thuotis famous and has become the Vietnamese coffee standard known by many.
Coffee Shop Atmosphere in Buon Ma Thuot
What impressed me, mr.hotsia, the most is that the coffee drinking atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. There are many coffee shops in Buon Ma Thuot city, from small shops to elaborately decorated ones with various styles. Some play loud music and have complex designs that don’t look like ordinary coffee shops, yet locals and tourists continuously visit to enjoy coffee.
I toured and tasted coffee at many shops, including strong black coffee, Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk, and rare coffee like civet coffee (also known as kopi luwak), famous as the most expensive and rare coffee in the world. Although made from civet droppings, the taste was an unforgettable experience for me.
Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival
Although I, mr.hotsia, have not had the chance to visit during the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival, held annually in early March, I plan to come next time to coincide with this festival. I’ve heard it’s a grand event that includes everything about coffee—competitions, coffee tastings from across the country, and many interesting activities.
For those interested in planning a trip to experience this festival firsthand, I recommend searching for “Buon Ma Thuot coffee festival” along with the year you want to visit to check the exact dates.
Local Lifestyle and Food in Buon Ma Thuot
Besides coffee, Buon Ma Thuot has a fascinating lifestyle. The food here is quite simple and focuses on freshness, especially breakfast, which is often beef pho with rich flavor. Lunch and dinner usually consist of grilled pork rice or crispy fried chicken, commonly found in markets and local eateries.
I, mr.hotsia, stayed near Coop Mart, a very convenient shopping mall for tourists. Most of my meals were at the food court on the second floor of this mall because it’s clean, affordable, and offers many authentic Vietnamese dishes such as curry rice, smoothies, and various desserts.
For those who love nem nuong, I recommend the restaurantAuthentic Vietnamese Nem Nuonghere in Buon Ma Thuot. The fresh vegetables, rich dipping sauce, and hot grilled pork make dining here an experience not to be missed.
Travel and Accommodation in Đắk Lắk
If you want to visit Buon Ma Thuot, traveling is easy. I, mr.hotsia, recommend flying from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City first, then taking a domestic flight with VietJet Air to Buon Ma Thuot Airport. It’s very convenient and fast.
There are many accommodation options in the city. The first area I stayed in was near the central tank monument, a tourist zone with budget hotels and many restaurants, convenient for walking and finding food at night. Alternatively, staying near Coop Mart is equally convenient; I stayed at MAI ANH hotel, which is right next to the mall.Recommended Affordable and Good HotelsHere
Must-Do Activities in Buon Ma Thuot
When visiting this world-class coffee city, the number one activity I, mr.hotsia, recommend is coffee tasting at the many shops on almost every street corner. Don’t forget to choose shops with many customers, as they usually serve genuinely good coffee. Also, don’t drink more than three cups a day to avoid sleeplessness.
There is also an evening market or night market near the central monument area, perfect for strolling, observing local life, and tasting various snacks. Additionally, there is a morning market offering fresh produce and local products for purchase.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Buon Ma Thuot, Đắk Lắk, is not just an ordinary coffee-growing city but truly the cultural center of coffee in Vietnam and the world. Walking and drinking coffee in beautifully decorated shops, surrounded by the aroma of fresh coffee beans and soft music, made me feel like I was truly traveling in the world of coffee.
