Lang Son Roasted Duck: A Must-Try Dish in Northern Vietnam
When it comes to roasted duck, many might think of MK roasted duck or Chinese-style roasted duck in Bangkok. But for me, mr.hotsia, who travels to explore food and lifestyles inLạng Sơn Provincein northern Vietnam, I can say that “Lang Son roasted duck” is the special dish you must try at least once in your life.
Lạng Sơn is a border town with a unique charm in its nature, lifestyle, and cuisine, especially the roasted duck dish that locals take pride in. The first thing I did upon arriving was to search for a famous roasted duck shop recommended by locals. Although it was just a simple street-side stall, the taste and freshness of the roasted duck impressed me so much that I had to share it.
Why is Lang Son Roasted Duck Outstanding?
The secret of Lang Son roasted duck is not only in the fresh duck or the spice marinade but what makes it truly unique is the use of “Chinese star anise leaves,” known in Vietnamese as "Mắc mật." This herb is widely grown in southern China, northern Vietnam, and even in Nan Province of Thailand.
These leaves are stuffed inside the duck before roasting, giving the duck a distinctive aroma and effectively cutting through the richness. Interestingly, these leaves also help with dandruff, which I only learned after researching following my tasting of the fresh, hot Lang Son roasted duck.
My Roasted Duck Experience in Lang Son with mr.hotsia
Lang Son roasted duck must be eaten hot. If left to cool, the flavor changes. I recommend finding a chance to sit and eat at a shop where the duck has just been roasted. Watching a large duck roasted until the skin is crispy, with rich flavors and the aroma of star anise leaves and spices infused into the meat, is an experience you rarely find in fancy restaurants or large establishments.
In Lang Son city, many street-side roasted duck shops display signs saying “Vit Lang Son,” which clearly means Lang Son roasted duck. If you get to try it, I believe you will understand why this place is called the “Capital of Vietnamese Roasted Duck.”
Connecting with Local Lifestyle and Other Foods of Lang Son
After enjoying the roasted duck, I didn’t miss exploring other local dishes in this town, such asBún Cá Noodle Soupor fish noodle soup with water hyacinth, which has a unique character, as well as the raw egg soup I mentioned in my article.Raw Egg SoupHighly recommended, the broth is fragrant and sweet, and the egg yolk floating in the bowl gives a smooth and uniquely delicious sensation.
In the Morning, the Morning MarketChợ Đông Kinhis where I strolled and truly experienced the lifestyle of Lang Son locals. The market is full of fresh produce and local foods. Here, you can see villagers buying fresh ingredients, vegetables, fruits, and a variety of ready-to-eat foods. It’s a colorful daily life scene that leaves a strong impression.
Accommodation and Transportation in Lang Son
For accommodation, I chose to stay atHoang Son Hai Hotelan 8-story hotel located in the city center. Staying on a higher floor gave me the chance to enjoy beautiful city views from above and was convenient for traveling to street food stalls or shopping areas. This hotel is affordable, around 600 baht, but offers good rooms and full services, suitable for travelers seeking value and comfort.
After enjoying the roasted duck, I often took walks by the city lake,Lạng Sơn Lake, where the evening atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, blending nature and urban lifestyle perfectly.
