Northern Vietnamese Housing in Lai Châu Province

When talking about Lai Châu Province, located in the northwest of Vietnam, bordering China, it is a high mountainous area full of diverse hill tribe lifestyles. One group I, mr.hotsia, am very interested in is the Tay people, including White Tay, Black Tay, and Tai Y. These ethnic groups speak languages from the Tai-Kadai family, surprisingly similar to our Thai language. Simple words like father, mother, duck, chicken, eat, rice, fish all sound very familiar.

I arrived in Lai Châu during the warm season, with temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius, which is considered warm for a highland area. The atmosphere in the capital city of Lai Châu, locally called “Lai Jao,” is filled with the traditional lifestyle of the hill people. What impressed me most was seeing the Tay people's houses that still firmly preserve their original style.

Most Tay houses here are built on stilts to protect against moisture and reptiles common in the forests. The houses usually have front balconies for sitting or various activities, like the heart of family life. The roofs are high and traditionally made from natural materials like clay tiles or leaves, but nowadays some have been updated with modern materials like tiles or corrugated iron. However, the distinctive classic shapes remain. I walked around many houses in the hill tribe villages here and clearly saw how well they preserve their traditional ways.

For me, mr.hotsia, seeing these houses is not just about architecture but like touching a living past and culture. These houses were not built just for beauty but perfectly suit life in this terrain sustainably. I once visited a hill tribe village called “Sin Ho” in Lai Châu Province. There, the houses were not only beautiful but also surrounded by pristine nature.

Getting here is not too difficult. I chose to stay in Lai Châu city for convenience and proximity to the morning market. The fresh market here is full of local ingredients and foods to try. I stayed at the “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach” hotel located in the city center, within walking distance from the market and city lake. The atmosphere was very nice, perfect for relaxing and planning to explore Tay houses in nearby communities.Hotels in Lai ChâuThere are many options, but I recommend choosing hotels without massage or karaoke services for true tranquility.

Lifestyle and Culture Through Housing

The Tay houses in northern Vietnam are not just residences but reflect a lifestyle closely connected to nature and simplicity. Inside, spaces are well-organized, mainly built with bamboo and hardwood. Although some roofs have started to change materials, the main structure remains the same.

I, mr.hotsia, saw the elders in the village living peacefully, farming rice, growing vegetables, and raising small animals around the house. Some houses gather farming tools and daily utensils on the balcony, which is more than a functional space but also the center of family relationships.

What is interesting is the language spoken in the village, which is similar to our Thai language, including greetings, animal names, and storytelling. Listening to it reminded me of my hometown without realizing it. I enjoyed listening to locals share stories in a familiar language, like traveling back in time to the past of the Thai people in this region.

Travel and Accommodation Recommendations in Lai Châu

If anyone is interested in experiencing the lifestyle and houses of the Tay people in Lai Châu Province, I recommend planning a trip from Hanoi, about 450 kilometers north. Traveling by car or public bus takes several hours, but the route is full of high mountain views and thick, intricate fog.

For accommodation, I suggest staying in Lai Châu city or near the city lake for easy access to morning markets, fresh markets, and nearby attractions. Importantly, there are coffee shops to enjoy local morning drinks comfortably. For more details about accommodation in Lai Châu, you can readHotels in Lai Châu

Experience Local Food and Culture

Food here is another charm I, mr.hotsia, never miss, especially dishes of the Tay and hill tribes in Lai Châu, using fresh local ingredients like Vietnamese chicken biryani or nem fang. Each dish is full of balanced and rich flavors. Watch the clipsVietnamese Chicken BiryaniorVietnamese Nem Fangto whet your appetite.

At the morning market, I tried freshly grilled button squid. The aroma of spices and the sweetness of the squid made the taste unique and very memorable. Seafood lovers must not miss this.Grilled Button Squid Vietnamis another dish I highly recommend trying.

Summary of Experience with Tay Houses in Lai Châu

Visiting Lai Châu Province and experiencing the Tay houses in northern Vietnam made me, mr.hotsia, feel like traveling back to the roots of the Tai-Kadai culture in this region.
