Hotels in Lai Châu, the border town I fell in love with
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take everyone to experience a relaxing stay in the city of Lai Châu, known by locals as Lai Châu, the capital of Lai Châu province. It is located in the far northwest of Vietnam, near the Chinese border. I had the opportunity to visit and stay two full nights to truly immerse myself in the lifestyle and culture here.
Choosing accommodation in Lai Châu was important to me because this small city perfectly blends old and new. I stayed at a hotel called “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach,” located in the city center. It’s just a few minutes' walk to the morning market and the central lake. The hotel is simple but clean, giving the feeling of staying in a local’s home.
For travelers planning to visit Lai Châu, I recommend staying in the city center or near the lake area. This spot is perfect for relaxing in the evening and convenient for enjoying morning coffee by the lake while watching locals shop at the market or exercise around the pond. There are many restaurants and food stalls to choose from here. Although it’s a bit far from the large fresh market, this area is also convenient for public transport access.
Stories from walking the morning market and viewing the lake
One morning after waking up, I walked to the morning market in Lai Châu city, not far from my hotel. This market is the heart of the city, where locals from various ethnic groups in the province gather to sell goods and local food. I tried several Vietnamese breakfast dishes, including sticky rice with grilled pork and hot pho, which gave me a warm feeling I can’t describe.
After that, I continued to the city lake. A cool breeze blew gently, accompanied by views of mountains and houses lining the lake. This atmosphere reminded me of the peaceful and simple life in mountainous areas like Lai Châu, which is characterized by high mountains and mist covering parts of the year. Although a small city, it is full of vitality and charm not found in big cities.
Getting to know Vietnamese-style hotels in Lai Châu
Some may wonder how comfortable hotels in Lai Châu are. I can say there are many hotels to choose from, fitting various styles and budgets. However, travelers like me should be cautious about cigarette smoke and special services such as massage or karaoke, which are often included in many Vietnamese hotels and can sometimes disrupt the relaxation experience.
At “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach,” where I stayed, there are no massage or karaoke services, creating a quiet atmosphere perfect for those who want genuine rest. Another thing I liked is the hotel’s location, allowing easy walking to the morning market and lake without needing a car or motorbike, helping me truly experience the slow life of locals.
Lai Châu and the charm of a border province rich in culture
Speaking of Lai Châu province, it is highly culturally diverse, with up to 20 ethnic groups living in the area. Most of the terrain is mountainous with cool weather, especially in areas above 1,500 meters above sea level, where hill tribe villages like Sin Ho are located. I have read and heard that Sin Ho is a popular tourist spot in northern Vietnam.
Although Lai Châu city is not a main destination for foreign tourists, it is worth visiting to experience a simple lifestyle and traditional culture. Additionally, it offers beautiful landscapes and fresh air year-round, ideal for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities, enjoy slow walks, sip coffee by the lake, and relax in a quiet hotel like this.
Summary of experiences and recommendations from mr.hotsia
For anyone looking for accommodation in Lai Châu, I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying in the city center or near the lake for convenience. The hotel “Phuong Thang kinh chao quy khach” is a good example of a well-located, easy-to-access, and peaceful place, perfect for genuine relaxation.
Don’t forget to check hotel services and odors, as many places in Vietnam offer massage and karaoke, which may not suit some travelers like me. Also, walking the morning market and viewing the lake in Lai Châu city were activities I really enjoyed and encourage everyone to try.
