Cuisine of the Lai Châu People with real experiences from mr.hotsia
When talking about Lai Châu province, located in the far northwest of Vietnam, near the borders of China and Laos, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit the capital city of this province, Lai Châu city, locally called “Lai Jao.” Of course, the core of this trip was not only nature or culture but also the food, which I intended to experience in detail myself.
I stayed in the city center of Lai Châu for 2 nights, choosing a hotelPhuong Thang kinh chao quy khachlocated in the heart of the city, just a few minutes' walk to the morning market and the central city lake. This hotel is in an area that perfectly blends old and new, unlike many hotels in Vietnam that often have massage or karaoke services inside, which I don't prefer because there is usually cigarette smoke in public areas. But here, there was no such problem, allowing me to rest fully and be ready to explore the local food thoroughly.
Strolling through the morning market, experiencing Lai Châu life
One morning, I woke up and walked around the morning market in Lai Châu city. The market here is not as large as in big cities but is full of fresh local produce and foods that are hard to find elsewhere. The atmosphere was lively with the voices of locals from various ethnic groups living in this province, which has up to 20 ethnic groups.Lai Châuis a province with rich cultural diversity, and the food clearly reflects this diversity.
At this morning market, I tried various local dishes, starting with “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani,” where the chicken is marinated with rich spices, fragrant with Chinese herbs and local herbs, served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that cuts through the richness very well. (For those who want to see the detailed cooking process, check outVietnamese Chicken Biryani video). Next was “Grilled Button Squid,” which locals like to grill fresh and hot. The enticing aroma led me to a small roadside stall. The squid meat was slightly crispy and a bit salty, eaten with hot sticky rice, making the perfect combination. (Watch the preparation inVietnamese Grilled Button Squid video)
City lake, a resting and dining spot for locals
After walking through the market, I stopped by the city lake, a popular spot for Lai Châu locals to relax in the evening and at night. The lakeside atmosphere is cool and comfortable, even though the province tends to be quite hot and humid in summer. The breeze over the lake makes it feel much fresher.
By the lake, there are several small coffee shops and restaurants, perfect for resting and trying local food. I chose to sip strong Vietnamese coffee and ordered “Nem Phang,” which is marinated pork grilled until fragrant, topped with a special dipping sauce from the Lai Châu people. The sour and salty taste blends perfectly with the savory aroma of grilled pork. (For those interested in this dish, seeVietnamese Nem Phang video)
Recommendations for accommodation in Lai Châu city
From my experience, mr.hotsia recommends staying in the city center or near the lake area because it is convenient for traveling and finding food. The large fresh market is a bit further away, but if you prioritize easy access to public transport, staying near the lake is a better choice.
The hotel I stayed atPhuong Thang kinh chao quy khachtruly meets the needs of travelers because it is within walking distance to the morning market and the lake, no need for a vehicle, and it does not offer massage or karaoke services that might cause cigarette smoke to disturb your rest.
Lai Châu, a city of culture and must-try food
Lai Châu province is not only about beautiful mountain nature or diverse ethnic cultures but also has a charming local food dimension. I, mr.hotsia, traveling alone, experienced the essence of this city through its flavors and the lifestyle of the locals. It was an unforgettable experience.
