Bien Hoa Dong Nai Food: Local Flavors That Mr.Hotsia Must Share
When talking about Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province in Vietnam, many might think of an industrial city near Ho Chi Minh. But for me, Mr.Hotsia, this place is a charming local food hub with unique flavors waiting to be truly discovered.
I had the chance to stay atthe Tulip Hotel in Bien Hoa cityfor two nights, near the morning market which is a key starting point to taste local food here. Honestly, walking through the Bien Hoa morning market is not just about finding food but immersing in the local lifestyle blending Southern Vietnamese food culture with Dong Nai’s unique identity.
Roast Duck, Crispy Pork, and Fermented Shrimp Paste Noodles: Three Must-Try Dishes
In this city, I noticed locals love eating roast duck and crispy pork. The highlight of the roast duck here is perfectly crispy skin with the fragrant Vietnamese spice flavor. The crispy pork is crunchy without being greasy. Paired with hot steamed rice, it’s so delicious I had to order several plates.
But the dish that impressed me the most wasFermented Shrimp Paste Noodlesor what Vietnamese call “ban dau mam tom.” This is a very unique and interesting local dish. The shrimp paste chili sauce here is unlike any other, with a sweet and sour taste combined with fresh chili spiciness and a distinctive fragrant shrimp paste aroma. I enjoyed dipping rice noodles in this sauce along with fresh vegetables and fried tofu that is crispy outside and soft inside. At first glance, it may seem simple, but the flavor is deep and addictive.
Bien Hoa Morning Market: A Meeting Point of Fresh Ingredients and Local Life
The morning market in Bien Hoa is my favorite place to walk around because it gathers a wide variety of fresh produce, especially freshwater fish like big snakehead fish and eels, which are more abundant than back home. Locals expertly prepare fish by cutting the skin with scissors instead of scaling it like we do, making the fish in the market look very clean and appetizing.
The market also has many vegetarian food stalls, which surprised me because it seems people here eat vegetarian food more than elsewhere, while fish and seafood remain popular. I saw curry rice stalls too, but I recommend not trying the snakehead fish as its taste is not very good.
Street Snacks and Other Must-Try Dishes
When it comes to common street snacks in Bien Hoa, “Bot Chien” or fried rice flour with egg is often seen. I tried it and really liked it. It’s crispy outside, soft inside, with a slightly sweet and salty taste, eaten with fresh vegetables and a special dipping sauce similar to our oyster omelet sauce. I ordered it with two eggs, which was just enough for one meal. It costs about 30 baht and is within walking distance from the Tulip Hotel where I stayed.
There are also smoothie shops called “Sinh To,” a very popular fruit smoothie drink in Vietnam. Although I didn’t try it here, I saw them sold along both sides of the street, reflecting the freshness and care in ingredients by the locals.
Food in Malls and Buffet Restaurants: Shabushi in Bien Hoa
If you want a break from strong local flavors, try visiting Big C mall in Bien Hoa. There is a very good value Shabushi buffet priced around 250 baht per person, but if you go around 3 PM, it’s reduced to only 180 baht. The meat served in the large set is bite-sized, and there are three broth options: Vietnamese style, Thai tom yum, and clear Chinese broth with chili. I recommend the tom yum, which is spicy and flavorful, perfect for Thai taste like mine.
Besides meat, this restaurant also offers water and drinks on the conveyor belt for you to choose freely. It’s a great option for travelers wanting to try something new while enjoying the convenience of home.
Living and Eating in Bien Hoa: A Unique Experience
As a traveler who has visited many markets and restaurants in Southern Vietnam, I feel Bien Hoa perfectly blends the old food culture with modernity. Although there aren’t many pho shops here, I never felt lacking because other dishes like fermented shrimp paste noodles and roast duck are so excellent they almost make you forget pho.
