Travel to Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province with mr.hotsia
When talking about a charming and lively small city like Bien Hoa in Đồng Nai Province, Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, must say this city is interesting and perfect for those who want to experience authentic local atmosphere not far from Ho Chi Minh City.
Traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Bien Hoa is very easy. I chose to take the bus from Cho Lon station (pronounced Je Len), the main bus station of Ho Chi Minh. Buses depart every 25 minutes. The convenience and affordable price make the trip worthwhile and hassle-free. Bien Hoa is only 30 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City.
When I arrived, I noticed heavy traffic due to the expansion of the bridge over the Đồng Nai River, an important bridge connecting this city with other zones in the province. Traffic was dense and took longer than usual. At the bus station, motorbike taxis will ask if you want a ride, but I recommend taking the bus for safety, especially if you are unfamiliar with the routes.
Another tip I used on this trip was using a mobile phone with Google Maps installed and downloading maps in advance to pin accommodations and various places throughout the journey. Having GPS helped me avoid getting lost and made traveling easier, especially in a city with two Đồng Nai River bridges: the northern and southern bridges. Most long-distance vehicles use the northern bridge, so if you come from Ho Chi Minh via this route, you may need to take a taxi from the northern bridge to Bien Hoa city center.
Taxi service in this city is quite convenient, especially the Mai Linh meter taxi service, which can be called at 3826262. This is very important if you want to travel freely within the city. If you plan to stay several days, I recommend buying a SIM card with a 3G package because the signal is good and helps you stay connected at all times.
Accommodation in Bien Hoa City
The accommodation atmosphere in Bien Hoa is quite simple and affordable. I stayed at Tulip Hotel, which is near the city’s morning market. There are no guesthouses like in bigger cities, only mid-range hotels with moderate prices around 400-600 baht per night depending on room type. The rooms are clean, air-conditioned, and have very fast internet, much faster than back home.
The hotel owner doesn’t speak much English, but we communicated with gestures and basic Vietnamese, which worked fine. The hotel is not far from the market, allowing me to walk to the morning market and easily buy simple food. Morning Market and Local Food in Bien Hoa
The morning market in Bien Hoa is one of my favorite places because it has a lot of fresh freshwater fish for sale, especially big snakehead fish and eels. You will see locals skillfully cutting fish skin with scissors without the hassle of scaling. Frogs are also sold with their skin already removed.
The market is divided into two zones: covered and open-air. I prefer the open-air zone where locals spread their goods on the ground, showing a genuine lifestyle rarely seen in big cities. There are also seasonal fruits like custard apples and pomelos sold along both sides of the street. A must-try is the smoothie shop or “sinh tố,” a Vietnamese-style blended fruit juice that I often enjoyed.
For breakfast, I usually walk around the morning market to find simple food before returning to the hotel. For lunch, if it’s too hot, I recommend eating at COOP or Big C mall, which has restaurants and a reasonably priced Shabushi buffet (about 180-250 baht). I recommend the spicy Thai-style tom yum soup here, which has plenty of meat and drinks on the conveyor belt.
Talking about local food here, I recommend tryingBan Dau Mam Tom (Rice Noodles with Shrimp Paste Chili Sauce)which is a unique local dish I tried and really liked. Their shrimp paste chili sauce is rich, perfectly balanced sweet and sour, eaten with fresh vegetables, fried tofu, and Vietnamese pork sausage. It’s something hard to find elsewhere.
If you want to deeply experience Vietnamese food, I suggest walking the morning market and trying the rice with curry shops here. But a warning: don’t try the snakehead fish; the taste might not suit you.
For those who enjoy cultural experiences and want to feel the real lifestyle of Bien Hoa locals, the morning market and local eateries are places you shouldn’t miss.Bien Hoa Local CuisineHere, the variety and flavors differ from big cities like Ho Chi Minh.
Bien Hoa City: Lifestyle and Industry
The Bien Hoa I visited is a city with a large industrial park and many workers living and working here, making the city lively day and night. The city’s development is reflected in the bridge expansion and infrastructure improvements, which will make travel more convenient in the future.
Although it is an industrial city, it still retains a warm and friendly local lifestyle. I experienced this by walking the market, taking the bus, and talking with locals. The Đồng Nai River flowing through the city is a vital artery that makes this city fertile and more attractive for tourism.
