Dong Nai Province (Bien Hoa, Đồng Nai) Vietnam: An industrial city hiding local beauty and culture

When talking about a city just 30 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City that still keeps its own identity, blending modernity and traditional lifestyle, I, mr.hotsia, must say “Dong Nai” orBien Hoa, Đồng Naiis an answer many overlook, even though it holds many hidden charms.

Traveling to Bien Hoa, Dong Nai City

For travelers like me who want to experience Vietnamese life at a relaxed pace, taking the bus from Cho Lon Station in Ho Chi Minh City to Bien Hoa is a great option. Buses depart every 25 minutes and it doesn't take long to reach the city. Although the industrial area is quite busy, especially when I visited during the expansion of the Dong Nai River bridge, causing some traffic jams, it was fascinating to see the exciting changes.

On the ground, I, mr.hotsia, recommend using a mobile phone with Google Maps and preloading pinned maps because the Dong Nai River bridge here has two bridges, north and south. Most long-distance vehicles use the northern route, so you need to take a taxi a bit further into the city. However, meter taxis here provide good service, even if they are not very numerous.

Accommodation in Bien Hoa City: Simple Comforts That Soothe the Heart

Many might wonder what kind of accommodation this city offers. I stayed at Tulip Hotel, located not far from the morning market. It's very easy to walk to the market. Although the owner doesn't speak much English, we communicated comfortably with basic Vietnamese and gestures. The room had cool air conditioning, soft beds, and very fast Wi-Fi, about 10/5 Mbps, clearly much faster than in Thailand.

There are no backpacker guesthouses here, but mid-range hotels at reasonable prices. A twin room costs about 600 baht, and 400 baht per person, which is very good value considering the comfort and service in this city. Especially if you choose to stay near the market zone, you can easily stroll through the morning market and enjoy the view of the Dong Nai River up close.

Bien Hoa Morning Market: True Local Life and Flavors

The morning market in Bien Hoa is one of my favorite markets because it has both covered and open-air sections. Locals simply lay out their goods on the ground, but there is a wide variety of fresh items, especially freshwater fish like big snakehead fish and eels, more abundant than at home. An unusual way they prepare fish is by cutting off the skin with scissors without the hassle of scaling. There are also seasonal fruits, such as pomelos, which are sold in large quantities and taste very good here.

Besides fresh goods, I also like the smoothie stalls called “Sinh To” found on street corners. The fruit smoothies here are sweet, fragrant, and refreshing, perfect for cooling down in the hot southern Vietnam climate.

Local Food: Must-Try Flavors in Dong Nai Province

The food here is very distinctive, especially roast duck, crispy pork, and my favorite,Ban Dau Mam Tom (rice noodles with shrimp paste chili sauce)This dish is one of the best traditional Vietnamese dishes I highly recommend. It comes with plenty of fresh vegetables, fried tofu, Vietnamese pork sausage, and a shrimp paste chili sauce that is sweet, sour, and spicy just right. It is a popular dish among the people of Bien Hoa.

Additionally, in the market and general restaurants, there are many curry rice and vegetarian food stalls scattered throughout the city, making it easier for vegetarians or those who eat vegetarian food to find meals. I have tried several dishes myself and was impressed by the freshness of the ingredients and the carefully prepared flavors.

Must-Visit Attractions in Dong Nai

Dong Nai Province is not just an industrial city or urban lifestyle; it also has interesting cultural and natural attractions. For example, Tien Bien Temple, which I recommend visiting at least once. This temple has a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for relaxing the mind and admiring authentic Vietnamese architecture.

Another favorite spot of mine is Buu Long Tourist Park, a large public park ideal for relaxation, walking, or picnicking in a natural setting near the city.

The Dong Nai River flowing through this province is also an interesting route, especially its source at the Cambodia-Vietnam border in Ratanakiri. Taking a boat trip or enjoying the riverside view helps us better understand the local people's way of life in that area.

Experience Local Culture and Handicrafts

Dong Nai is famous for traditional ceramics with beautiful and delicate patterns. There are also skilled artisans specializing in ancient weaving techniques that are still preserved today. I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to see and experience these crafts myself. It made me feel the true value of Vietnamese culture in this area.

Summary of Experiences and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

I believe many might think Dong Nai is just an industrial city near Ho Chi Minh, but actually, it is a lively city with simple and sincere lifestyles. The morning market is the best place to experience local flavors and culture. Affordable accommodation, fast internet, and delicious food are plentiful. For those who want to travel Vietnam at a relaxed pace, I recommend visiting Dong Nai at least once.
