From Son La Province to Yen Bai Province with a genuine bus experience

If you have followedmr.hotsiafor a long time, you probably know that I enjoy traveling by local buses in Vietnam because they offer a true atmosphere of local life more than flying or taking luxury trains. This time, I traveled from Sơn La Province to Yên Bái Province by local bus. It is a route rarely chosen by tourists but is full of vibrant life and authentic Vietnamese simplicity.

Route and Starting Point at Sơn La

I traveled to Sơn La from Điện Biên Phủ, a province about 150 kilometers away. Along the way, the mountain scenery and rice fields interspersed among Thai Black ethnic villages impressed me greatly.Sơn La Provinceis an area about 600-700 meters above sea level. The weather was cool and pleasant during the winter when I visited. Although not as cold as back home, it felt very refreshing.

In Sơn La city, I stayed at a small guesthouse called Nha Gghi alibara near the market and the city park. It was convenient to stroll around the market and experience the lifestyle of the Thai Black people here up close.Accommodation in Sơn Lais not abundant but sufficient for travelers as the area is not yet crowded.

Atmosphere on the Local Bus – True Vietnamese Experience

On the morning I departed from Sơn La Bus StationSơn La Bus Stationis about 7 kilometers from the city center. I took an affordable taxi there. The bus I took was a genuine local bus with no tourists aboard, only locals and villagers using the service heavily. At times, I had to stand to give seats to locals, feeling the sincerity and traditional manners of Vietnamese people here.

The bus departed on time in the morning, running through routes filled with views of rice fields alternating with villagers' houses, distant mountains, and lush green forests on both sides. The scenery was unusual and beautiful, making me stop and gaze without looking away.

Lunch on the Bus – Simple but Endurable

Midway, the bus stopped at a small roadside eatery for lunch. I ordered pho, a traditional Vietnamese dish, but the taste was not very impressive. The pho here had almost no meat, just broth with noodles and boiled vegetables. However, I tried to eat it as I needed energy for the journey ahead. The surrounding scenery and atmosphere compensated well for the plain food.

Arriving at Yen Bai – A Walkable and Warm City

In the late afternoon, I arrived at the bus station in Yen Bai city, located in the city center. It is only a 10-minute walk from the train station, very convenient for travelers like me who enjoy strolling and taking photos along the way. From the bus station to the city center, there are shops and small markets to stop by, taste local food, and observe local life closely.

I chose to stay near the train station so I could walk in the morning and capture the city’s atmosphere as it slowly wakes up. It has a simple and peaceful charm that I really like.

A Small Tip for This Route

I must say this route is not suitable for those expecting comfort or English-speaking services because there are no tourists along the way, and most drivers or staff barely speak English. You must prepare yourself with patience and use body language or some basic Vietnamese vocabulary. This is the charm of traveling withmr.hotsiawho loves to delve into the real lifestyle of local people.

If you want to know Sơn La more deeply…

After leaving Điện Biên Phủ for Sơn La, I stayed here for two full nights, experiencing both the marketSơn La Marketwhich is full of local products. My favorite street food wasVietnamese Stir-fried Tofuand traditional snacks at the market, which have a scent similar to our banana fritters but with slightly different taste and preparation.

Additionally, I was lucky to watcha performance by students in Thai Black ethnic costumesat the provincial theater. It was a local show held at that time, impressing me greatly with the culture and preservation efforts of the ethnic group here.

Various Accommodations in Sơn La

Sơn La does not have many luxury hotels but offers both large hotels and small guesthouses to choose from. Especially the guesthouse Nha Gghi alibara where I stayed was comfortable and located next to Sơn La market. Speaking of useful vocabulary when looking for hotels in Vietnam, you should know “Khách sạn” (large hotel) and “Nhà nghỉ” (guesthouse) to communicate more easily.

Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia

For me, traveling from Sơn La to Yen Bai by local bus opened a new world where I saw the real life of Vietnamese villagers unfiltered. The crowded bus with standing passengers, the warm and friendly atmosphere inside, the simple roadside food, and the beautiful natural scenery along the way made me enjoy and feel excited every minute of this journey.

If you like traveling unhurriedly and learning culture through observing and experiencing real life, I highly recommend this route from Sơn La to Yen Bai. You will surely gain memories and experiences not found in ordinary travel books.
