Night atmosphere with student performances in Son La
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Son La, a northern province of Vietnam. This city is the provincial capital located at an elevation of about 600-700 meters above sea level. Amid the cool weather during Thailand's winter season, I strolled around the city at night and happened to meet a group of Vietnamese students dressed in traditional Tai Dam costumes heading to a certain place. I didn’t hesitate and tried to communicate with them, understanding that they were going to watch a student performance at the provincial theater.
I followed them with interest and was fortunate to watch a lively performance by the youth of this province. At this theater, students and university students performed various ethnic dances, including dances of the Tai Dam and other ethnic groups living in Son La, as well as Vietnamese songs that gave me a true sense of local culture and connection.
I watched the performance for about an hour, taking photos and recording videos as memorable keepsakes. The show started around 8 PM, and the theater atmosphere was warm and lively, with many community members attending. This showed how much the people of this city appreciate and support cultural activities seriously.
Son La: A Peaceful City Full of Culture and Lifestyle
Son La is a city I traveled to by bus from Dien Bien Phu, about 150 kilometers away. It is located approximately 320 kilometers from Hanoi and near the Laos border at Chiang Khong district. Traveling here is quite convenient, and I experienced a city atmosphere that remains natural and less crowded compared to big cities.
The city has a population of over one million, mostly Tai Dam people, recognizable by their traditional costumes worn during ceremonies and events. I have previously written about this province; for more details, you can read atSon La Provincewhich I wrote earlier.
The Special Features of That Night's Performance
The performance I watched was officially titled "Lan Thu vinam Hoc 2012-2013," held from November 12-17, 2012, at the Son La provincial theater. It gathered students from various ethnic groups in the area, featuring traditional dances and Vietnamese songs that reflect the local people's lifestyle and beliefs.
From my experience, mr.hotsia, Vietnam has theaters like this in almost every big and small city across provinces, often accompanied by large public parks where people exercise and socialize during leisure time. Especially at night when there are performances like this, people gather enthusiastically. I really like this atmosphere because it creates a warm and close community feeling.
Travel and Accommodation in Son La
For travelers interested in watching performances or exploring Son La, I recommend following the route I took: from Chiang Khong to Udomxay, then by bus to Dien Bien Phu, and from Dien Bien Phu another 150 kilometers by bus to Son La city. The Son La bus station is about 7 kilometers from the city’s accommodation area, and affordable taxi services are conveniently available.Read details about Son La Bus Stationto confidently plan your trip.
There are not many accommodations in this city. I stayed at Nha Gghi alibara, a small guesthouse located behind Son La market near the public park, very convenient for exploring the city and accessing various places. Hotels and other accommodations are scattered nearby. For more information about lodging, you can checkHotels in Son Lawhere I have detailed my experience.
Experience Local Food and Lifestyle in Son La
After watching the performance, I didn’t miss trying local food at street stalls in Son La. The food here is simple and homely, not fancy like tourist restaurants. I usually observe and order what locals order, such as Vietnamese stir-fried tofu with a mild flavor and an affordable price of only 30 baht per dish, along with boiled vegetables and Vietnamese curry rice easily found in markets and street stalls.
The desserts here are also unique, such as fried vegetables, fried dough similar to Thai banana fritters, Vietnamese sticky rice cakes, and popular fried spring rolls in Son La. I recorded some local food videos on my YouTube channel as well, including Vietnamese Grilled SquidWatch Videoand Vietnamese Chicken BiryaniWatch VideoFor those who enjoy local food, I recommend walking around the markets and street stalls in the city center,Son La Marketwhich is a hub for fresh ingredients and food for locals.
