Son La Bus Station, the starting point for travel in Son La province

When talking about traveling in Son La, one of my favorite cities in northern Vietnam, Son La Bus Station is like the heart of tourism and daily life for the people here. The bus station is located about 7 kilometers from the city center accommodations, but don't worry about transportation from the city to the station because taxi fares in Son La start cheaper than what I've experienced in other Vietnamese cities. It's also a much more convenient way than walking or waiting for public buses.

This station offers bus services to several major cities in Vietnam such as Dien Bien Phu, a province I recently traveled through; Yen Bai, a small town with a simple atmosphere; and Hanoi, the sleepless capital city. I have personally used buses from this station to Yen Bai province and returned from Dien Bien Phu. The service was very convenient and punctual.

Tips from mr.hotsia for travelers at Son La Bus Station

From my personal experience, I recommend that when you arrive at Son La Bus Station, you should explore and gather information about buses to your desired destinations first. Take photos of the schedules and bus signs to help plan your trip more easily and avoid repeatedly asking questions. After that, finding accommodation in the city is still not too late because Son La city itself is not very large and has lodging suitable for travelers like me or those who prefer a simple atmosphere over luxury hotels.

Son La is not a major tourist city, and that is actually an advantage that makes the travel atmosphere feel natural and warm. Most locals here greet and chat with tourists in a friendly manner. I was once guessed to be from Korea or Japan and had fun joking around with them. This charm is what makes me want to return again and again.

Son La Bus Station and my travel plans

On my previous trip, I used Son La Bus Station as both the starting and ending point of my trip in this province. After traveling by bus from Dien Bien Phu, which is about 150 kilometers away, and then continuing to Yen Bai, about 320 kilometers from Son La, I stayed in the city for two nights to experience the local lifestyle and food before moving on to other destinations.

Lifestyle and street food near Son La Bus Station

Near the bus station and in Son La city, I often choose to eat at roadside stalls where locals really live, not tourist-oriented places. Vietnamese food here focuses on simplicity and freshness, such as “Vietnamese stir-fried tofu” which I tried served over rice for only about 30 Thai baht. The taste was mild and very satisfying.

Street stalls often have bamboo water pipes for smoking in front, a culture found both in Son La and Dien Bien Phu. My favorite snacks are fried vegetables and fried dough similar to Thai banana fritters, sold right on the street.Son La Marketwhich is another fresh produce and delicious food hub you shouldn't miss.

Local desserts like Vietnamese sticky rice cakes and fried spring rolls are commonly sold at roadside eateries I passed by. Finally, I saw only one shop selling smoky grilled chicken and pork, which gave me the feeling of truly experiencing the real life of northern Vietnamese people.

Accommodation in Son La city where I, mr.hotsia, stayed and recommend

Speaking of accommodation in this city, I stayed at Nha Gghi Alibara, a small guesthouse located behind Son La market, next to the city’s public park. The atmosphere is quiet and comfortable, suitable for travelers who want to truly experience local life.

Generally, there are not many hotels in Son La, about six only, mostly small hotels and guesthouses around the market area. If you want a larger star-rated hotel, there are some but not many. For more details about accommodation in Son La, check the articleHotels in Son Lathat I have written.

Continuing travel from Son La Bus Station

I once traveled from Son La to Yen Bai province by bus that departed on time and was quite convenient, although the bus was a local one with no tourists at all, and at times I had to stand to give my seat to a pregnant woman. The scenery along the way between Son La and Yen Bai is very beautiful, with Vietnamese houses interspersed with lush green rice fields. The simple rural atmosphere is something I really like.

Impressions from a student performance in Son La city

During my evening walk in the city, I had the chance to see students dressed in traditional Black Thai ethnic costumes performing at the provincial theater. It was a beautiful and energetic dance and folk music performance. Such events made me feel like I truly absorbed the lifestyle and culture of Son La people.

The atmosphere in the theater and the city park at night is warm and lively. If you have a chance to visit Son La, don't forget to watch this cultural performance that I have described in my article.Student Performances in Son LaYes
