Hotels in Son La, a charming small town in Vietnam

Speaking of Son La city in Son La province, which is the provincial capital located at an altitude of about 600–700 meters above sea level, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience the lifestyle and atmosphere of this town up close. Coming from Dien Bien Phu, Son La is not a city with many hotels like big cities, but it is full of simplicity and genuine warmth of the locals.

During my stay in this town, I chose to stay atNha Gghi alibarawhich is a small hotel located behind Son La market and next to the town's public park. This location is very suitable for those who want to experience the authentic community lifestyle because from this accommodation I could easily walk to explore Son La market, the central city market, and the public park where locals often exercise and meet in the mornings and evenings.

I walked around the town and found that Son La does not have many hotels, only about six. Around my accommodation, there is one large high-class hotel next door, which is considerably more expensive. Walking along the main road, you will find small hotels operating as shophouses at intervals, mostly guesthouses or simple lodgings suitable for backpackers or people traveling for work in the area.

Get to know accommodation-related vocabulary in Vietnam

"Khách sạn"(Khách sạn) means a large hotel with full services. For smaller guesthouses or small lodgings, the term used is"Nhà nghỉ"(Nhà nghỉ). For example, I stayed at “Nha Gghi alibara,” a small guesthouse that is convenient and has a friendly atmosphere. When asking for a hotel or accommodation, use the phrase"Nhà nghỉ ở đâu"which means "Where is the accommodation?" or"Khách sạn ở đâu"to ask for a large hotel.

Atmosphere and travel in Son La city

Son La is a city with ethnic diversity, inhabited by the Black Thai and various tribes, giving the city a unique charm and culture. I, mr.hotsia, have walked around this city several times and observed that most locals still live simply, with fresh markets, street food markets, and small shops open all day.

Regarding travel to Son La, it is convenient to take a bus from Dien Bien Phu, about 150 kilometers away. The route offers beautiful scenery with mountain views along the way. Arriving at Son La bus station, which is about 7 kilometers from the accommodation area in town,is easy, and taxi services are cheaper than in many other cities in Vietnam.

Recommended atmosphere at Nha Gghi alibara

Accommodation like Nha Gghi alibara is a small guesthouse with a warm and very friendly atmosphere. I like that it is close to the market and public park, so you can wake up to the sounds of locals exercising and chatting happily. This place is suitable for those who want to experience the real life of Son La residents without staying in luxury hotels or far from the community.

For those who want to see this kind of accommodation atmosphere, I, mr.hotsia, have recorded a video to show the real images before booking. It is reasonably comfortable for solo travelers or small groups, and the price is very affordable, suitable for budget travelers who do not want to give up basic conveniences.

Precautions and tips for traveling in Son La

Son La is a relatively safe city, but I, mr.hotsia, recommend not walking around late at night, especially in unfamiliar areas, because it is still a small town where traffic and safety are not comparable to big cities in Vietnam.

Additionally, travel and communication in this city have limitations because most locals speak the local Vietnamese dialect, and English is not widely spoken. Preparing vocabulary or using simple language combined with gestures will greatly facilitate communication.
