Thái Nguyên Province - The Tea City and Cultural Hub of Northern Vietnam
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Thái Nguyên Province, located in the northeastern region of Vietnam, in the mountainous inland area about 80 kilometers from Hanoi. It is easily accessible by train, minibus, or bus from Long Bien Bus Station. I stayed two nights in the city center at Victory Hotel, which was affordable at 600 baht per night. The internet was fairly fast but occasionally disconnected. The rooms were comfortably cool with TV, though some rooms had a slight cigarette smell. For those wanting to experience the lifestyle and atmosphere of a major city in northern Vietnam, this place will not disappoint.
A vibrant city full of life and the best tea flavors in Vietnam
Thái Nguyên is a large city comparable to Hanoi, with a population of over one million and home to eight different ethnic groups living together. The province is also recognized as an important educational center in the country, with as many as 21 universities and colleges, ranking third in Vietnam.
But what stands out and must be mentioned is Thái Nguyên's “tea.” This place is considered the renowned center of tea production. The tea here is praised as the best in Vietnam. If you are a tea enthusiast, you must not miss tasting the fresh and fragrant local tea from the tea plantations in this province. I have tried it several times and truly feel the difference compared to tea from other places.
Experience the original morning market life and local food in Thái Nguyên
To understand the lifestyle of Thái Nguyên city residents, I recommend waking up early to visit the morning market.Thái Nguyên Province Morning Market, VietnamLocated not far from Victory Hotel, this market opens along a main road, filled with bicycles and fresh produce stalls. There is an impressive variety of vegetables, fruits, and fresh flowers, as well as lively stalls selling fresh ducks and geese. The market atmosphere is full of vitality and truly reflects the local community spirit.
Breakfast here is also a charm I really like, whether it’s pho noodle soup or bun, sold roadside at affordable prices. I recommend having breakfast at the market to taste authentic flavors and see the real lifestyle of the locals. Or if you want something simpler, there are also banh mi sandwiches widely available in the city.
Food in Thái Nguyên - Delicious Roasted Duck with Chinese Star Anise Leaves
Food is another aspect that impressed me greatly in Thái Nguyên, especially the roasted duck with Chinese star anise leaves, a famous dish I tried and loved.Roasted Duck Stuffed with Chinese Star Anise LeavesThis roasted duck is stuffed with star anise or madan leaves before grilling, giving the meat a fragrant aroma and rich flavor. When eaten with hot steamed rice and a special dipping sauce made from inside the duck, it’s incredibly delicious and unforgettable.
Generally, locals eat rice with Vietnamese-style set meals. The city’s weather is quite hot and humid with some flies, but this does not hinder eating. I also stopped by several fresh coffee shops in the city, which had good taste and refreshing drinks, perfect for relaxing after walking the market or sampling various dishes.
Nightlife and accommodation in Thái Nguyên
At night, the city has a different vibe. Karaoke bars fill the alley behind Victory Hotel, with dozens of venues. I walked by to check the atmosphere and learned that they offer singing rooms with Vietnamese female companions to sing along. However, due to the strong cigarette smoke, I chose to save my energy for the next day’s sightseeing.
There are many accommodation options in the city. Most hotels are located on main roads, affordable, with clean rooms and cool air conditioning. Some have restaurants upstairs. I tried food at a hotel once; although not freshly cooked, the atmosphere was very nice, suitable for those who prefer to avoid the hot sun during the day.Read more about hotels in Thái Nguyên
Interesting tourist attractions in Thái Nguyên Province
Besides the city itself, Thái Nguyên Province also offers interesting natural and cultural attractions such as ATK Dinh Hoa on Phu Dinh Mountain, a park area with beautiful caves, or the Museum of the Culture of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups, showcasing the cultures of various ethnic groups in northern Vietnam. Although I focused mainly on the city, I recommend setting aside a day to visit these places for a more diverse experience.
