Thái Nguyên Province, Vietnam: Tea City, Lifestyle, and Must-Try Food
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to explore Thái Nguyên Province, located in the northeast region of Vietnam. Many may not be familiar with this province, but having experienced it myself, I can say it is a very interesting city with its people's lifestyle, local food, and most importantly, the famous tea of Vietnam.
Thái Nguyên is about 80 kilometers from Hanoi and can be conveniently reached by train, bus, or minibus from Hanoi. I chose to take the train from Hanoi station directly to the city center, which took just over 2 hours. The city is fairly large with a population of over one million and is an educational hub with 21 universities and colleges, ranking third in the country for education.
One standout feature of Thái Nguyên that I clearly experienced is the role of the tea industry here. Tea produced in Thái Nguyên is known as the best in Vietnam. Tea lovers must not miss the chance to taste the local tea here. It has a rich aroma and a smooth flavor. If you want more details about this province, I have written a guide inThái Nguyên Provinceright here.
Thái Nguyên Morning Market: Lifestyle and Local Food Not to Be Missed
One morning while staying at Victory Hotel in the city center, I walked toThái Nguyên Morning Marketwhich is not far from the hotel. Walking along the main road to the end, you will find a riverside market bustling with local people selling their goods.
This market is interesting because it offers a variety of goods including fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and local food. I was very impressed with the fresh duck and goose stalls lined up along the street. Next to them were noodle shops serving pho and bun where you can sit and eat. I chose to enjoy hot pho while watching the local lifestyle here, which is a rare sight in big cities. This morning market is the heart of Thái Nguyên city, showing the simplicity and warmth of the locals.
Local Food: Roasted Duck Stuffed with Mắc Mật Leaves – A Dish I Will Never Forget
Regarding food, I must say that “Roasted Duck Stuffed with Mắc Mật Leaves” is a top dish I highly recommend. Anyone coming toThái Nguyên Provinceand not trying this dish is missing out. The roasted duck here is special because they stuff it with Mắc Mật leaves, a herb with a unique fragrant aroma, before roasting. This makes the duck meat fragrant and richly flavored. I ate it with hot steamed rice and a slightly spicy dipping sauce. The taste impressed me so much that I think of it every time I recall northern Vietnam.
Besides roasted duck, local food in Thái Nguyên also includes noodles, pho, fresh fruit smoothies, and bánh mì bread sold along the streets. For breakfast, I enjoyed walking the morning market and tasting street food that offers an authentic atmosphere of Thái Nguyên people. For lunch or dinner, if you want a relaxed atmosphere, I recommend dining on the 11th floor of Victory Hotel where I stayed. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, and although some dishes are pre-prepared, it is convenient and suitable for those who want to rest after a full day of sightseeing.
Accommodation and Transportation in Thái Nguyên City
I stayed at Victory Hotel in the city center for two nights, costing about 600 baht per night. The room was clean, air-conditioned, with TV and internet that occasionally disconnected but was usable. It is close to the morning market and the main city street, making travel very convenient. There are many karaoke bars in the alley behind the hotel, which is a nightlife spot for locals. However, as I mentioned, I did not try it, but if you like this kind of atmosphere, don't miss it.
For transportation within the province, besides trains and buses from Hanoi, there are bicycles and motorbikes for rent in the city, making it easy to explore. I preferred walking to experience the atmosphere and capture small details of local life.
