Thai Nguyen food: Flavors you must try from the heart of mr.hotsia

When talking about Thái Nguyên province in northeastern Vietnam, many may know it as one of the country's top tea production centers. But from mr.hotsia's perspective, having traveled there personally, the food here is just as charming as the tea. It is also full of stories and a truly captivating way of life.

Atmosphere and lifestyle through Thái Nguyên morning market

One morning in Thái Nguyên city, I chose to walk toThái Nguyên morning marketwhich is located not far from my accommodation at Victory Hotel. This market is not just a place to buy fresh food but also a space that clearly reflects the local way of life. I saw people riding bicycles to sell goods along the street, fresh flowers displayed along the way, and interestingly, fresh ducks and geese sold by the roadside. The lively atmosphere feels vibrant in the morning.

In the market, there are many small noodle, pho, and bun shops. I didn’t miss the chance to sit and enjoy delicious street food while watching the lifestyle of the people of Thái Nguyên. This was an experience that impressed me, mr.hotsia, deeply because I got to see the sincerity and simplicity of the locals up close.

Must-try dish: Roasted duck stuffed with Mắc mật leaves

The dish I was impressed with and want to recommend to everyone is “Roasted duck stuffed with Mắc mật leaves,” known in Vietnamese as “Mắc mật,” an herb grown in northern Vietnam including Thái Nguyên province and Nan province in Thailand. These leaves have a unique fragrant flavor and are also known to help with dandruff.

The roasted duck here is special because they stuff the duck’s cavity with Mắc mật leaves and herbs before roasting. This creates a fragrant aroma and a rich, flavorful duck meat. Eating the roasted duck with hot steamed rice, dipping in the sauce inside the duck, and biting the slightly crispy roasted Mắc mật leaves is something mr.hotsia considers one of the unforgettable dishes. Unique breakfast and lunch in the city

For breakfast in Thái Nguyên, I recommend waking up early and visiting the morning market. Besides enjoying hot pho or bun (Vietnamese rice porridge) in its authentic form, it’s also a great opportunity to truly experience local life. For those who like bakery items such as bánh mì (Vietnamese-style bread), they are widely available in the city to choose from as you like.

For lunch, if you want to relax without going out in the sun, I once tried dining on the 11th floor of my hotel. The atmosphere was nice and reasonable for the price. Although it was a buffet-style set up some time ago causing some dishes to get cold, the flavors remained authentically Vietnamese with convenience as the main focus.

Dinner: Full feast of roasted duck and hot steamed rice

When evening comes, I usually choose to eat a roasted duck with hot steamed rice at a roadside or local restaurant in the city to complete a satisfying meal after a day of sightseeing. Especially in the lively big city atmosphere where karaoke bars and entertainment venues are scattered in alleys behind the hotel, but I, mr.hotsia, prefer to quietly enjoy delicious food.

Fresh coffee and fruit smoothies: Drinks that refresh

If you travel to Thái Nguyên, you will see many fresh coffee shops in the city. I have tried the coffee here and found it very good, perfect for an afternoon energy boost. There are also fruit smoothies orTrái bơ Sinh tố Smoothiewhich are famous in the area and very suitable for the hot and humid weather of Thái Nguyên.

Finally: Why does mr.hotsia love the food here?

Thái Nguyên is not only famous for its renowned tea but also a city full of diverse flavors and deep local charm. It is easily accessible from Hanoi, just 80 kilometers along Highway 3, whether by train or minibus, making it convenient. Experiencing the food here feels like traveling back in time to a traditional lifestyle blended with the modernity of a big city.
