Yên Bái Province, an agricultural and natural city that remains peaceful in northern Vietnam

When talking about small provinces in northern Vietnam that still preserve their natural environment and authentic agricultural lifestyle, Yên Bái Province is one destination that mr.hotsia highly recommends visiting at least once. This province is located in northern mid-Vietnam, covering a vast area of 6,899.5 square kilometers with a population of over 750,000. The terrain is mountainous and complex, with elevations reaching over 1,500 meters above sea level. The atmosphere is cool, with an average temperature around 18 degrees Celsius. From December to January, the weather becomes cold enough in some areas to cause frost and occasional snow. This province is perfect for nature lovers and those who enjoy lush green surroundings.

Thác Bà Lake, the main tourist attraction created by hydropower

If we talk about the highlight of Yên Bái, we must not miss Thác Bà Lake, the largest lake in Vietnam, covering over 234 square kilometers and featuring 1,331 small islands. This lake was created for hydropower development but has become a highly interesting tourist spot. Besides the vast lake views, there are famous caves such as Hum Cave, Cầu Cuối Cave, and Bạch Xà Cave to explore, as well as Thác Bà Temple located on the lakeshore, offering a peaceful and mystical atmosphere.

mr.hotsia had the chance to reach the boat dock at the lake but must say that boat rental prices here are still quite high, so we didn’t take a full boat trip. However, just seeing the wide lake view was incredibly relaxing. Additionally, there are mountain climbing and hiking activities to experience the nature around the lake.

Lifestyle and Yên Bái City: The Red River and Local Market

Yên Bái city is located along the large Red River flowing through the city center, creating an atmosphere that is both peaceful and lively at the same time. Walking around the city, mr.hotsia found it less hectic than big cities in Vietnam but full of rural charm that preserves traditional ways of life very well.

One of the places mr.hotsia really liked isYên Bái Marketlocated opposite the train station. It is a bustling market where locals shop actively in the morning. Here you can find simple breakfast foods such as fried tofu, bánh mì, bánh cuốn, and traditional strong Vietnamese coffee. Also, the flower market here is abundant and very beautiful, especially with cold-climate flowers that are rare in other areas. mr.hotsia didn’t buy anything but enjoyed strolling and admiring the colorful flowers at this market.

Food: Local Flavors mr.hotsia Didn’t Miss Tasting

From travel experience, mr.hotsia found that food in Yên Bái focuses on phở noodles and simple single-dish meals rather than large restaurants. Most roadside eateries sell phở and clear broth noodles with fresh vegetables and various side dishes. If you want authentic Vietnamese rice meals, you can find them in rice shops offering set meals with separate bowls or rice with boiled, stir-fried vegetables and various meats. The flavors are not too strong but mild and pleasing to Asian palates like mine.

mr.hotsia also triedroast duckat a small shop along the way from the bus station to the train station. The roast duck here has crispy skin and tender meat with delicious dipping sauce. Although the shop has no seating, I chose to take it back to the hotel to enjoy with friends. For those wanting to try a full variety of Vietnamese dishes, you can follow myfood article about Yên Bái Provincewhich I wrote in great detail.

Travel: Convenient Train Route with Beautiful Views Along the Way

For traveling to Yên Bái, I chose to use bus and train routes, traveling from Chiang Khong through Udomxai to Điện Biên Phủ, then taking a bus to Sơn La, staying two nights before continuing to Yên Bái in the late afternoon. Another very convenient option is taking the train from Lào Cai to Yên Bái. This railway line is a main route connecting Hanoi and Lào Cai, making it easy for travelers heading to Sapa or Hanoi to pass through this city.

mr.hotsia recommends taking the train during the daytime because the views on both sides are very beautiful. Yên Bái train station is located in the city center, making travel convenient and allowing you to truly experience the local atmosphere. Accommodation: Hotels in Yên Bái City and High-Speed Internet

Speaking of accommodation in Yên Bái city, I found that there are not many hotels here. After exploring the city, I found only about four hotels. But good news for those needing internet connection is that upload and download speeds here are very high. I stayed at a hotel namedThuong Mai Hotel Yenbaiwhich is located opposite the train station. It’s a very convenient spot, and the internet here is faster than in many big cities I have visited.

For travelers wanting to stay in a convenient place with basic amenities, this hotel is a very good choice. Mr.Hotsia also learned basic Vietnamese phrases at this hotel, such as the phrase to say no room cleaning needed “คงหล่ามสัดฟ่อม,” which allowed me to work comfortably on my computer without worrying about housekeeping interruptions.

Summary of Experiences and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

Yên Bái Province is a place that I, mr.hotsia, am impressed by for its nature and lifestyle that still maintain simplicity very well. It is suitable for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities to experience a peaceful atmosphere, cool breeze, and mountains surrounding this small town, including the beautiful Thác Bà Lake and various outdoor activities.

If you want to experience the true local life, don’t forget to stop by Yên Bái Market to taste local food and buy fresh produce, or try the delicious roadside roast duck that’s so good I had to take it back to the hotel like I did. Traveling by train is also an experience not to be missed, as you get to see beautiful views on both sides and experience the atmosphere of small communities along the route.
