Yen Bai Market: The Heart of Morning Life in Yên Bái

When I talk about my journey in the province ofYen Baione of the most memorable images is stopping byYen Bai Marketlocated opposite and diagonally across from Yen Bai train station, which is where I usually have my breakfast. This city may not be as bustling as Hanoi or Sapa, but this market has a simple charm of local life that I want to share in detail.

Yen Bai Market is not large or grand, but it is full of simple breakfast stalls that I tried and loved, such as crispy fried tofu with a unique flavor, banh mi or French bread combined with local ingredients like Vietnamese pork sausage and fresh vegetables, as well as banh kep pak mo (steamed rice dumplings) sold in front of the market that looked very appetizing. As someone who often enjoys walking markets and tasting street food, I was impressed by the freshness and rich flavors of the food here.

For coffee lovers, Yen Bai Market has traditional Vietnamese coffee shops, but what excited me was seeing many sachet iced coffees sold in this town. The brewing method is very simple: just tear the sachet, add ice, and mix with hot or cold water as you like. No need for drip coffee machines like in other cities, yet the taste is smooth and refreshing enough that I bought some to try brewing at home. Anyone who enjoys Vietnamese coffee should trythis sachet iced coffeeat Hanoi airport on the way home. I guarantee it’s a great product from Yen Bai.

Flower Market and Surrounding Atmosphere

Besides food, another thing that caught my attention at Yen Bai Market was theflower marketwhich has many shops selling cold-climate flowers. The flowers here are beautiful and colorful, making me linger for a long time. Even though I didn’t know why I would buy them, I enjoyed admiring their beauty and the market’s atmosphere filled with a gentle floral scent. It was a refreshing and peaceful scene on a morning in this province.

As for the dry market located on the upper floor of the market building, I found shops selling clothes and various goods. The atmosphere was similar to Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi, with diversity and a true local market vibe that made me feel closely connected to the daily life of the locals here.

Travel and Accommodation Around Yen Bai Market

When it comes to traveling to Yen Bai Market, a key highlight is traveling by train because Yen Bai train station is in the city center.Just a few minutes’ walk from the stationto the market. I personally took this train line from Lao Cai and stayed here for one night before continuing to Sapa. Buying tickets can be difficult for those not fluent in Vietnamese like me, but using gestures and writing down times on paper helped a lot.

For accommodation in this city, I recommendThuong Mai Hotel Yen Baiwhere I stayed, located opposite Yen Bai train station. It’s very convenient for travelers who prioritize quick access and proximity to attractions. Importantly, the internet is very fast for working or sharing experiences, suitable for those needing high-speed internet in a rural area like this.

Atmosphere and Taste of Food at Yen Bai Market

If you like simple local food, I suggest visiting Yen Bai Market in the morning. You will see street food stalls selling pho, bun noodle soup, Vietnamese rice dishes with sets of boiled vegetables, stewed, spicy chicken served separately in bowls to choose as you like. These stalls usually have few seats, but the atmosphere is warm and very friendly.

Additionally, the market has a grilled duck stall I really like, located between the bus station and Yen Bai train station. This grilled duck has firm meat and crispy skin.I bought some to eat with friends at the hotel, and although the stall has no seating and doesn’t sell rice, I bought plain rice from a nearby shop to eat together. This flavor can only be found in Yen Bai.

A Few Small Experiences from mr.hotsia

I traveled to Yen Bai in December. The weather was cold, about 18 degrees Celsius, but the market atmosphere was warm with the liveliness of locals and the aroma of food that made me hungry. Some days I chatted with vendors. People here don’t often eat out much. The city looks quiet, but Yen Bai Market is a hub that made me feel the pulse of this town.

As a traveler who loves to experience real life, I see Yen Bai Market as a place where you can see the simplicity and sincerity of northern Vietnamese people. Plus, you get to try unique sachet coffee, fresh breakfast, and beautiful cold-climate flowers, all creating unforgettable memories for me.

If you plan to travel to this province, don’t forget to visitYen Bai Provincewhich has Thac Ba Lake and many high mountains to explore. Before continuing to Sapa or Hanoi, try staying here for a night to truly experience local life.
