Yen Bai Train Station: Gateway to Adventure in the Heart of Northern Vietnam
For those planning to visit Yên Bái Province in northern Vietnam, Yen Bai Train Station is a choice I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation. It is the gateway to a city full of natural charm and local culture that remains deeply traditional. Traveling here by train is not only convenient but also allows you to experience the slow-paced atmosphere of the Vietnamese countryside, unlike the fast and rushed feeling of traveling by car or van.
Yen Bai Train Station is located in the city center, close to the main market and various accommodation areas, making it easy to get off the train and explore the city on foot. I once had a small problem buying tickets because I’m not fluent in Vietnamese, but I solved it by using gestures and writing the desired time on paper for the staff to see. This method worked so well that I highly recommend others try it if they plan to come here.
Yên Bái Province: A Fertile Agricultural City Surrounded by Nature
Yên Bái Province itself is a mountainous area primarily focused on agriculture. Located in northern Vietnam, it borders Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces to the north, and also shares borders with Son La, Tuyen Quang, and Phu Tho provinces. Covering 6,899.5 square kilometers with a population of over 750,000, this area offers diversity in both culture and nature.
One of the province’s notable attractions is Thac Ba Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam, covering 234 square kilometers with more than 1,300 islands. Around the lake are beautiful caves such as Hum Cave, Cau Cuoi Cave, and Bach Xa Cave, as well as Thac Ba Temple located on the lakeshore, which is a perfect spot for relaxation and enjoying scenic views.
Traveling by Train: Convenience and Charm of Vietnamese Railways
I, mr.hotsia, chose to travel by train from Lao Cai to Yen Bai. The morning train I took was a standard air-conditioned van. The journey took some time, but the atmosphere on the Vietnamese train was very interesting—quiet and with a feeling of stepping back in time. The trains here are well-maintained and cleaner than expected, especially with special care given to tourists.
After getting off the train, I usually stroll around the station to experience the local lifestyle. Yen Bai Market is located across from the station and is where I often stop for breakfast. There are simple breakfast stalls selling fried tofu, bánh mì (Vietnamese bread), and rice paper rolls. There’s also a traditional Vietnamese coffee shop that caught my interest. They sell iced coffee in sachets that you can brew with ice, an idea I liked so much I bought some to take home to Hanoi.
Markets and Local Food: Taste the Authentic Flavors of Yen Bai
When it comes to food in Yen Bai, I think of street stalls selling pho or noodle soup with a mild, balanced flavor. Although there aren’t many rice shops, I was lucky to find a place serving set meals with boiled vegetables, soups, spicy stir-fries, and chicken served separately with rice in bowls or large pots. The price is about 60 baht per person, which is affordable and very delicious. I enjoy trying local dishes and can say the flavors here definitely won’t disappoint.
While traveling from Yen Bai Bus Station to the train station, I found a famous roast duck stall that looked very appetizing. Although there were no seats, the roast duck was tender with crispy skin, so I bought some to eat back at the hotel with friends. It was a fun and delicious meal for me, mr.hotsia. Accommodation and Internet: Comfort in This Small Town
There are very few hotels in Yen Bai city; I found only about four. The place I chose was 'Thuong Mai Hotel Yenbai,' located opposite the train station. It offers very high-speed internet, allowing me to work and upload content conveniently. This hotel is a good example of simplicity but meets the needs of travelers like me well.
For travelers who want to tell the hotel not to clean the room that day, I recommend the simple Vietnamese phrase “còn làm sạch phòng,” which means no need to clean the room. I often use this phrase when working in my room and don’t want staff to disturb me.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Yen Bai Train Station is not just a stopover but a center of feelings I want to share. It blends the simplicity of local life with the beauty of nature and culture. I spent one night here before continuing to Sapa and Hanoi and hope everyone gets to experience this atmosphere themselves.
