Dalat is the capital city of Lam Dong province.

(Lam Dong) In Vietnamese (pronounced Da Lat by Vietnamese people), it is a popular tourist city in Vietnam favored by both Vietnamese and foreigners. The city was established during the French colonial period as a cool year-round resort. Eventually, Dalat and another city, Sapa in northern Vietnam, were chosen because Dalat is located on the Central Highlands plateau. The city is a beautiful valley with cool weather all year round.

Dalat is a must-visit city for travelers. Mr.hotsia visited Dalat in February when the weather was still cold, around 20 degrees Celsius, with occasional afternoon rain. Many Vietnamese tourists visit, buying daily tours. At night, people ride bicycles around the city, walk the pedestrian street, and enjoy lake views. Dalat is a fully developed tourist city where vendors and locals are very familiar with tourists.

Some vendors dislike having their photos taken. If you want to photograph the food they sell, always ask for permission first. The way Vietnamese tourists travel in Dalat often involves booking accommodations with beautiful views, which are more expensive, and driving themselves, similar to how Thai people visit Khao Kho. Another group, including foreign tourists, stays in central Dalat and buys tours to ride the cable car, watch ethnic minority performances at night (Vietnamese tourists), and visit flower gardens.

Tours in Dalat are reasonably priced and affordable. At night, walking the pedestrian street and night market is enjoyable. Dalat is a cool city, so walking is never tiring or hot. The flowers and lakes are beautiful. I recommend foreign tourists buy tours designed for foreigners, choosing ones popular among Westerners to get good English-speaking guides. I once bought a tour that was poorly managed, with no guidance or explanations after drop-off.

Many tours are exclusively for Vietnamese tourists because many Vietnamese travel independently and buy daily tours. To identify good companies, look for large agencies in central Dalat with many Western customers. A must-do tour is the city tour, which includes riding the cable car, visiting waterfalls, the Valley of Love, and temples. Another popular tour is the flower garden tour, which includes tasting coffee made from civet cat droppings. You can travel to Dalat by bus from other tourist cities or buy tickets from Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam uses an agency system for convenient continuous travel. I recommend buying bus tickets from agencies rather than boarding at bus stations, as you must get there yourself, and communication can be difficult, causing extra costs. To travel from Thailand to Dalat, you can go to Ho Chi Minh City first by bus from Phnom Penh or by flight from Bangkok, then continue by bus to Dalat. Dalat tours are also sold in Ho Chi Minh City's Pham Ngu Lao area.

Accommodations in Dalat come in various price ranges. Guesthouses start at 350 baht, or you can stay in comfortable hotels with beautiful views from 400 baht per night, similar to 700 baht hotels in Thailand. Dalat offers many hotel options. If worried about availability, book in advance on Agoda. Click here to book accommodations in Dalat. Choose lodging near Dalat market, as it is the city center, convenient for walking to the night market and lake.

Buying tours is also convenient there. Dalat is not a very large city; walking around takes less than an hour. I walked from the market to the lake area. When Mr.hotsia visited, I stayed in an alley behind the market with a beautiful window view at an affordable price of 400 baht per night. Dalat has a famous local dish sold in many restaurants that I tried and found delicious. The dish is (Click here to read about this dish), a noodle soup with fish eggs and chicken eggs mixed.

It is popular and commonly eaten by Dalat locals. Other dishes include Pho, available in all Vietnamese cities, priced at 40-50 baht per bowl. For tasty Thai-style food, visit restaurants, which are delicious but a bit pricey. Budget meals are available on the second floor of Dalat market, with many affordable rice and curry shops. There are also unique smoothies like aloe vera juice. International cuisine is available due to many Western tourists.

Important attractions not to miss in Dalat include a beautiful valley with a lake in the middle and a flower garden. Especially in winter, the valley is covered in mist, creating a stunning view. Other must-see places are Dalat train station and walking by the city lake. At night, Dalat has a walking street and night market with artists painting portraits and writing Vietnamese calligraphy. I have experienced this local activity myself.

It truly connects you to Dalat's lifestyle. A satisfying trip. Mr.hotsia March 2012. Mr.hotsia recommends accommodations in Dalat city.
