When visiting Hanoi, you should not miss watching the water puppet show. From what I observed, it seems to be a traditional entertainment of Vietnamese farmers, played as a pastime during ancient rice farming times. However, I still wonder why, although rice farming is similar to ours, there is no such show in Thailand. Anyway, let's see how they perform and play. Before the water puppet show, there is a performance of authentic Vietnamese music. I think they play very well, deeply touching me to the point I was at a loss. The music sounds truly beautiful.
It captivated the entire theater audience into silence. After the music, there was Vietnamese singing followed by the water puppet show, which included lights, colors, and sound effects with quite a few techniques, leaving the audience puzzled about how the scenes were created. To give a full experience, I recorded a 1-hour video from entering to leaving without editing, so you can watch it fully as if sitting next to Mr.Hotsia. For more information, see the wiki about water puppetry.
This is a Vietnamese puppet show performed exclusively in Hanoi at the theater by Hoan Kiem Lake on Dinh Tien Hoang Street. In Thailand, parts of it have been performed in Pattaya. The water puppets are controlled by puppeteers behind bamboo blinds that conceal them. The puppets are attached to long rods that extend beyond the stage, manipulated by the puppeteers. The puppets are made from light camphor wood, which supports their weight in water.
The puppeteers must not show the control rods, making the puppets appear to have their own movements. Mr.Hotsia May 2011. Affordable and good hotel in the Phu Tho area.
