A city with a long history, once the capital of northern Vietnam. To imagine it, Hanoi is like Chiang Mai of Thailand, and Sapa is like Pai, with a similar vibe. Hanoi's weather is not too hot. It is a starting point for planning northern Vietnam trips or a place to relax after visiting Sapa. Most travelers use AirAsia flights with ticket prices around 3,500 THB for one-way tickets, or cheaper if you find promotions.
Or you can use Jetstar or Vietnam Airlines. I traveled by road from Chiang Khong crossing Huay Sai, Udomchai, Muang Khua, Dien Bien Phu, Sapa, Lao Cai, then took a train to Hanoi. Another popular route is the sleeper bus costing 900 THB from Vientiane to Hanoi (see Vientiane-Hanoi sleeper bus). Accommodation in Hanoi ranges in price like Chiang Mai. Cheap lodging is around the Hanoi lakehead or Hoan Kiem Lake area.
Dormitory accommodation costs about 5 USD per person, private rooms start at 10 USD. Hotels start from 30 USD and up. You can find hotels in Hanoi on hotsia.co. Hanoi offers various dining options. To experience local life, you can sit and nibble pork knuckles by the roadside or sip coffee with watermelon seeds near the church chatting with new Vietnamese friends. Thai restaurants by the lake serve dishes for just over 100 THB.
Or you can eat rice with curry dishes commonly found in Hanoi for 50-80 THB per plate. Attractions recommended by Mr.Hotsia in Hanoi include the water puppet show with tickets at 90 THB, which is affordable. If you want to take photos inside, you must buy a 20,000 VND camera ticket. There are museums in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake, and ancient temples around the lake. I enjoy the lake area in the evening until nightlife starts; it feels lively.
Young Vietnamese couples sit by the lake, and people jog around, showing Hanoi's vibrant life. Northern Vietnam tourism starting from Hanoi is very convenient. Hanoi offers tours to Sapa, Halong Bay, and all kinds of bus tickets within Vietnam or cross-border. There are many ticket offices in Hanoi. Before buying, check prices from two or three places. Vietnamese tours often pass customers along in groups.
Wherever we stayed, they offered various travel packages. I find Hanoi safe for tourists; no one complained to me about problems. Months ago, walking on the street, some people asked 'lady?' so I prepared a Vietnamese phrase 'Tôi sợ vợ' meaning 'I'm afraid of my wife' to reply. Now no one asks anymore because Vietnam seriously cracked down on such issues.
Because such problems cause many issues if allowed. I've heard about robberies and extortion of tourists. Hanoi is colorful with Vietnamese motorbike riding. At big intersections without traffic lights, drivers skillfully weave through traffic. This is my fifth visit to Hanoi, and today I saw motorbikes crash for the first time. The crash was minor; both fell and then went their own ways. It was surprisingly simple.
When visiting Hanoi, practice crossing the street. Mr.Hotsia advises: walk forward, don't stop or step back. Motorbike riders here know the rhythm and won't hit you. Enjoy your trip to Hanoi.
