36 kilometers away, there are daily buses running back and forth from Lao Cai. Bac Ha Market is where local hill tribes come to buy and sell goods. Today, Bac Ha Market attracts many tourists, some stay overnight and others just shop and leave. However, the market still retains its charm. There are still more hill tribe people than tourists. Bac Ha Market gathers essential food and daily necessities for the locals and hill tribes, mostly vegetables and fruits.
Some people bring horses to carry goods home, but not many; I only saw a few. At Bac Ha Market, I saw hill tribe people dressed in full orange traditional attire. They love eating sugarcane, so I asked to buy some to try. The sugarcane here has a soft peel that you can bite and peel with your teeth just like in childhood. At Bac Ha Market, there are local food stalls mostly selling pork offal. Most locals bring cooked rice from home and buy only side dishes from these stalls.
They gather to drink liquor at the pork stalls. I imagined how after a hard week of farming, Sunday is their day to relax and celebrate a little. Friends from different villages come together here regularly. Traveling by bus is interesting. Although Bac Ha is a small town, it has enough hotels, accommodations, restaurants, and coffee shops for tourists to stay. The hotels in Bac Ha cost about
10 USD per day, and coffee prices range from 20-30 baht depending on the shop. I saw foreigners taking the bus from Bac Ha to stay in Lao Cai, meaning they stay in Lao Cai and take the bus. Bac Ha Market is only open on Sundays or Sunday Market. Visitors must plan their time carefully. Sapa Market is mostly on Saturdays. Most tourists visit Sapa on Saturday and Bac Ha Market on Sunday. Visiting Bac Ha Market can be either by staying overnight or, like me, buying a tour from Sapa to visit the market during the day.
The tour then dropped me off at Lao Cai in the evening so I could take the train from Lao Cai to Hanoi. mr.hotsia May 2011 22 32 3.762 N, 104 17 33.558 E GPS coordinates (POI) 180-degree panorama Bac Ha Market (BAC 22 32 9.767 N, 104 17 26.843 E) Traditional hill tribe attire at Bac Ha Market 22 32 3.695 N, 104 17 33.545 E 22 32 4.763 N, 104 17 32.051 E Eating authentic Vietnamese Banh Cuon (steamed rice rolls) at Bac Ha.
