I recommend taking the Phuong Trang company bus (Phuong Trang www.tutabuslines.com.vn) at the Pham Ngu Lao area.
The bus fare from Ho Chi Minh to Ba Ria or Vung Tau is 190 baht per person, the same price for all. I got off at Ba Ria town, a small town 20 kilometers from Vung Tau. The next day I took a local bus to Vung Tau. The bus trip took 4-6 hours due to traffic. On my trip from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau, there were many foreigners on the same bus who rode directly to Vung Tau. It’s convenient to take the bus from Pham Ngu Lao area in the afternoon and arrive by evening.
If there is no traffic, you can arrive in the evening. Taking a boat to Vung Tau requires going to the pier and paying for a taxi, so the bus is more convenient for some. For the return trip, I recommend taking a speedboat from Vung Tau back to Ho Chi Minh. The bus from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau stops for a break at Dong Nai where you can buy food, boiled corn, and fruit. The stop is short. I recommend eating something light or buying food to eat on the bus. It’s better to eat well before boarding the bus in Ho Chi Minh for convenience. mr.hotsia December 2013
