Based on my experience staying 3 nights in Vung Tau, you can choose the right area without disappointment. Vung Tau has two low mountains: the western one called Big Mountain and the eastern one called Small Mountain.
For the best views, stay on the mountains. For sea lovers, the best accommodation is on the long beach on the east coast. For a central location to explore the city and go to the beach by taxi, stay in the city area between the two mountains. I stayed at Nha Nghi Cat Phuong hotel on 7A Nguyen Truong To street, right next to a Vietnamese pancake shop (Banh Khot), which is actually more like fried seafood pancakes.
The area I stayed in had affordable hotels run by locals, not by the sea, and no beautiful views. To reach the sea, you must walk 10 minutes to the west coast or take a taxi to the east coast. It’s not far from the dog racing track. I liked the central location. The hotels on the east coast beach have beautiful sea views and are right by the beach—you can walk across the street to the sea. There are many large, expensive hotels there, and nearby alleys where locals stay and eat.
Accommodation prices are not very expensive, but food is definitely pricey. I paid 18,000 dong (about 30 baht) for a coffee, while normally coffee costs no more than 10,000 dong. The east coast beach area is great for swimming and staying for sea lovers, but there are no restaurants there; those are on the west coast beach area between the two mountains. When I went, I didn’t book accommodation in advance. I pinned locations on the map and had taxis take me to various hotels, but that didn’t work because I only found expensive hotels, and my budget was no more than 500-600 baht per night.
I recommend booking a hotel through Agoda for the first day to ensure accommodation and have more time to explore. If you want my recommendation, stay where I stayed—it’s good, cheap, and affordable. But if you have enough money, stay by the sea or at Petro House hotel.
