Nha Trang is a beautiful coastal city in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. I took a van from Nha Trang bus station, covering about 160 kilometers, taking 3-4 hours including a meal break. The bus is a local van service. These vans tend to charge tourists more than locals, and indeed they tried to charge extra for luggage by a few hundred baht. But I refused to pay extra. They didn’t force me off; they let me continue all the way to Ban Mae Thuot.
Here’s a tip to pay less for the bus fare: always ask the price before boarding, even before loading your luggage. If the price is too high, you can choose not to board and find another way. Usually, they don’t expect you to ask and will quote the real price only after you board. If they try to charge extra later, you have the right not to pay more than the agreed price. You can get off midway and take another bus or report to the police if needed. But if the extra charge is reasonable and you have enough money, you might just pay it. I usually do if I can afford it on that trip.
Remember to always ask prices beforehand, whether for food, coffee, snacks, or transportation. I left Nha Trang around noon and arrived in Buon Ma Thuot around 4 PM. I had time to look for accommodation. I stayed near Coop Mart where there are good and affordable hotels. On my first visit to Buon Ma Thuot, I was fascinated by the street lamps shaped like large vases lining the streets for several kilometers. They look like wooden vases but are actually made of concrete.
They are very realistic. These tall vase-shaped street lamps are a symbol of this province and are also sold as souvenirs called Loc Binh.
