Vietnamese coffee is one of the top exports worldwide. Therefore, Buon Ma Thuot is regarded as the coffee capital of the world. Dak Lak is the highest coffee harvesting region globally. Every district in Dak Lak has farmers growing high-quality coffee with unique flavors to make the Buon Ma Thuot coffee brand well-known and famous worldwide. Coffee drinking is very popular. In the city of Ban Mae Thuot, there are many coffee shops with diverse styles.
In the same area, you can count dozens of shops. Dak Lak locals enjoy drinking coffee daily. In Buon Ma Thuot, coffee shops are beautifully decorated, play loud music, and don’t look like typical coffee shops, yet locals still come in to enjoy coffee. The coffee shops here are the most beautifully designed with complex and unique styles to attract visitors to taste coffee. The city also offers civet coffee (actually made from civet droppings), which attracts tourists to try coffee here.
(Buon Ma Thuot) hosts the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival. This festival is held in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak, and is an important event in the Central Highlands. The festival started in 2005. When I visited, the festival was not taking place. If you want to visit during the festival, search for 'Buon Ma Thuot coffee festival 2014' or 2015 or 2016. It is usually held around early March every year. Traveling here is not difficult.
Fly from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City, then take VietJet Air from Ho Chi Minh to Ban Mae Thuot. I checked which year to go but planned to visit during the festival for sure. Even though my visit was not during the festival, I sampled coffee at many shops in Buon Ma Thuot city. The coffee shops here are grand and magnificent, playing music and decorated elaborately. It’s hard to believe these are coffee shops. Locals love coffee here. When you park, kids will take your car, staff invite you to sit, and bring you the coffee menu.
Or you can order smoothies too. Although I drink no more than two cups of coffee a day, being in the coffee capital of the world made me indulge.
