I was also mistaken about this for a while. Mr. Hotsia has traveled to Hanoi many times. Whenever I travel in Vietnam, I always stop by Hanoi. I remember the first time I flew from Dien Bien Phu to Hanoi.
Then I took a Lao airline flight to Vientiane before returning to Thailand at the border. Most recently, I flew AirAsia from Don Mueang Airport to Hanoi. Hanoi airport is about 30 kilometers from the city center. The best option to get into the city is to take the airline's shuttle bus to the Old Quarter. The bus service starts at 7:00 AM and costs about 100 baht per person (or less). This bus runs both ways and is the best choice for travel between the airport and accommodation areas in Hanoi.
For the return trip, if you have an early AirAsia flight, you won't catch this bus. There is no other choice but to take a taxi. Contact your hotel to arrange a pick-up; it's cheaper than using the meter. Taxi fares between the airport and accommodation areas in Hanoi are about 400 to 500 baht. For accommodation in Hanoi, I recommend the Old Quarter area, called Phu Huy To in Vietnamese. This church is located on Le Quoc Su Street. Tell the airport taxi to stop here. The taxi driver will ask if you have a hotel.
Hotel in Vietnamese is 'Khach San'. If you want to find a hotel by yourself, you can say 'Co Khach San Roi' meaning you already have a hotel. I recommend looking for a hotel yourself to find a cheap option, or book a hotel in Hanoi online in advance. Sometimes accommodations are fully booked. Nowadays (2013), popular Hanoi tours are daily tours from your hotel. The most popular day tour is Halong Bay, followed by Sapa.
The best time to visit both Sapa and Halong Bay is summer when the weather is clear. Halong Bay tours offer both day trips and overnight cruises. Sapa tours usually include 1 or 2 nights stay. The Sapa tour involves sleeping on a sleeper train for 2 nights round trip. Personally, I prefer Sapa more: beautiful, cool, not hot. Halong Bay is impressive but for Thais used to southern beaches, it’s not extraordinary. So I recommend spending more time in Sapa. I also suggest reading about Fansipan Peak if you want to visit.
For exploring Hanoi city, although there are one-day tours costing about 750 baht per person, I tried it and think traveling on your own is better. Mr. Hotsia recommends walking to Dong Xuan Market near Hoan Kiem Lake, then strolling around the lakeside area. At night, you can watch the water puppet show at the theater near the lake. At night, walk around to see young Vietnamese people eating sunflower seeds and drinking tea near the Old Quarter or find a chill café to relax.
Regarding food, Mr. Hotsia has recommendations. On my last trip, I stayed in Hanoi for four nights waiting for a Chinese visa, so I tried many restaurants. Recommended places include: Joma Coffee Hanoi, street porridge near the Old Quarter, Nem Ya or grilled pork near the Old Quarter, Hanoi roast duck near the Hanoi Circus, Khuah 37 rice soup, Mi Quang noodles near the Old Quarter, kebabs with French bread. These are places I ate and found delicious.
There is also a porridge shop at the corner near Joma Coffee. That place is delicious but I lost my camera so I couldn’t take photos. Nowadays, traveling in Hanoi is safe and easy to do on your own. Women can travel alone here. Budget accommodation in Hanoi costs about 400-500 baht per night depending on location. Daily expenses in Hanoi should be around 1,000 baht. You can calculate prices: Halong Bay tours cost about 750 baht round trip, Sapa tours about 3,000 baht for two nights. Once in Hanoi, you can shop around for prices or book hotels in Sapa and Hanoi in advance, then buy train tickets to travel independently. It depends on how adventurous you want to be.
Nowadays, young people don’t buy tours from Thailand to travel; they travel independently. You can do it too, trust me. Book AirAsia flights in advance now. Mr. Hotsia January 2013 Cheap and good hotels in Phu Huy To area.
