Phnom Penh 2016 Phnom Penh 2016: A capital full of life and stories

Hello, fellow travelers. This is mr.hotsia with firsthand experiences from Phnom Penh in 2016, the capital of Cambodia. I have had the chance to visit multiple times and deeply experience the real lifestyle of the locals here. This Cambodian capital city is not just about the royal palace or famous tourist spots; it is also filled with the essence of daily life, bustling fresh markets, delicious local food, and travel challenges that excite trip lovers like me.

Travel and impressions in Phnom Penh

For me, who has traveled to Cambodia many times, Phnom Penh is a very important starting point because it is the gateway to various provinces both within Cambodia and to neighboring countries. As I have written before inPhnom Penh Bus Stationwhich is the place to buy tickets or book through hotel agents for convenience, as language and communication systems are not as easy as back home. I myself chose to use Sorya Tour company when I wanted to go toTakeo Provincewith buses departing daily several times and taking about two and a half hours. Although sometimes the bus air conditioning is not very cold, it is a convenient and safe option.

Atmosphere and riverside lifestyle in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is located by the Mekong River and Tonle Sap River, which connect Tonle Sap Lake and the Mekong River. This gives the city beautiful riverside views full of vitality. I often take evening walks by the river to watch the sunset and see locals rowing boats to fish, or even stroll through the lively riverside market. Vendors at Phnom Penh fresh markets still use traditional selling methods. I have recorded the atmosphere ofPhnom Penh Fresh Market 2013and in 2016, the classic market atmosphere remains unchanged.

Khmer Food: Flavors You Must Try

Speaking of food in Phnom Penh, I must say the flavors rival anywhere in ASEAN. I especially enjoy tasting Khmer roasted duck, which is prepared with spices and methods completely different from our local roasted duck. Watch the clipEating Khmer Roasted Duck in Phnom Penh (Phnom Penh)and you will see how Cambodians go all out with flavor and fresh ingredients. Also, I like walking through the morning market and seeing live ducks as shown in the clipDuck at Phnom Penh Morning Fresh Marketwhich really enhances the eating experience many times over. Must-visit places in Phnom Penh

For anyone visiting Phnom Penh, missing the Royal Palace of King Sihanouk is a big miss. The palace is beautiful and historically significant. Additionally, there arethe Killing Fieldsandthe Tuol Sleng Genocide Museumwhich are places to learn about the country's brutal history but help us understand the past and appreciate peace today.

Outskirts and onward travel

If you have more time, I recommend visiting Udong, the former capital of Cambodia before Phnom Penh. It is about 30 kilometers from Phnom Penh. Travel may require hiring a round-trip car for a day, but the atmosphere and rural scenery filled with sugar palm trees and nature offer a peaceful and relaxing feeling.Udong City, Udong, Phnom Penhis another spot I want friends to experience.

Also, if you want to continue traveling to other provinces like Takeo or Kampot, bus services from Phnom Penh are convenient with many trips daily and affordable prices. I have traveled this route many times and have fond memories of Cambodia’s countryside and the simple traditional lifestyle of the locals.
