Eating Cambodian Roast Duck in Phnom Penh
Duck at Phnom Penh Morning Market

Exploring Phnom Penh's street food markets with mr.hotsia

When talking about traveling toPhnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, one thing mr.hotsia absolutely must not miss is wandering throughPhnom Penh fresh marketsand along streets lined with numerous food stalls. It’s like another vibrant color that reveals the real life of Cambodians in a way that typical travel books don’t tell you.

Phnom Penh, located by the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, has an especially lively street atmosphere in the mornings and evenings. My favorite area to stroll and find food is around the fresh markets, filled with the bustling sounds of vendors, the scent of spices mixed with fresh food aromas, and locals eagerly shopping for ingredients.

Street food in Phnom Penh... so delicious it deserves a thumbs up

mr.hotsia must say that the street food here is not just about a simple atmosphere but also packed with rich and diverse flavors, from sweet and creamy sticky rice topped with coconut milk to Cambodian roast duck that I tried at the morning market (if interested, watch my full video enjoying the roast duck atEating Cambodian Roast Duck in Phnom Penh)

At Phnom Penh fresh market, I saw vendors carrying freshly roasted ducks lined up for sale. The atmosphere was very lively. The roast duck here has the sweet and rich flavor of Cambodian spices combined with crispy skin and tender meat. It’s a must-try specialty that mr.hotsia highly recommends when visiting.

Besides roast duck, other dishes like minced pork basil rice or Cambodian-style chicken biryani are sold at small stalls with equally intense flavors. Those who like spicy food can add chili to taste. I enjoy wandering and tasting because each stall has its own secret recipe, even for the same dish.

Lively street atmosphere

In the evenings, Phnom Penh’s small streets near the Mekong river fill with food carts lined up. The atmosphere gradually changes from the morning fresh market to a food walking street featuring grilled skewers, pork satay, and even local desserts that are hard to find in big cities.

mr.hotsia enjoys sitting and eating while watching people, delighted by the sounds of the stalls and the aroma of food wafting through the air. Sometimes I chat with the friendly and smiling food vendors, which adds wonderful memories to this trip.

Travel and trip planning in Phnom Penh

If you are traveling fromSiem Reap to Phnom Penhor continuing by bus to other provinces like Takeo (Bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo province), I recommend planning accommodation and transportation through hotel agencies for convenience. Cambodia’s transport system is still not very easy for those unfamiliar with the language. Importantly, buses here usually have air conditioning, but sometimes the AC might not be as cold as expected.

After tiring travels, strolling to find street food in Phnom Penh is a great way to recharge and experience the unique lifestyle of the capital’s people.

More than just eating... Phnom Penh and unforgettable memories

For those interested in history and culture, Phnom Penh offers many fascinating attractions, including the Royal Palace andTuol Sleng, the Khmer Rouge prison in Phnom Penhwhich I have visited and which reflects intense historical memories.

But to speak seriously from mr.hotsia’s perspective, tasting street food here is another way to feel truly close to Cambodian life. Phnom Penh’s street food is not just about eating; it’s about culture, lifestyle, and community bonds that I want everyone to experience firsthand.

If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, don’t forget to set aside time to stroll through markets and taste street food in Phnom Penh. I guarantee you’ll have an unforgettable experience just like mr.hotsia.
