Kampong Thom Fried Goose Egg: A Unique Flavor mr.hotsia Must Try
Kampong Thom Province in Cambodia is a town where I, mr.hotsia, stopped for one night on the route from Siem Reap to Preah Vihear Province. Actually, going directly requires hiring a taxi priced as high as 3,000 baht, but I chose to travel by bus and stopped to taste local specialties here instead.
While walking around the Kampong Thom market this time, I was attracted by large goose eggs sold alongside other fresh foods. Curiosity made me decide to buy one to try. Since I had never eaten fried goose egg before, I asked a breakfast restaurant near my accommodation to fry it sunny side up. The egg was huge and the oil flooded the plate.
The taste of the fried goose egg I tried was similar to duck egg but with clearly richer oiliness and intensity. Although the price of goose eggs is much higher than regular duck eggs, about over a hundred baht each, while three duck eggs cost only 10 baht, for me it was worth trying because it offers a different texture and unique charm.
Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish: A Flavor That Still Lingers
Besides fried goose egg, I also ordered fried Tonle Sap snakehead fish to try. Previously, I had enjoyed grilled Tonle Sap snakehead fish at the Kampong Thom night market and was impressed. This time I wanted to try it fried. Most restaurants in Kampong Thom city don’t charge much for frying, allowing me to enjoy a large fried snakehead fish with crispy outside and tender inside. The natural sweetness of Tonle Sap fish remained unchanged, reflecting fresh ingredients and the skilled cooking of Kampong Thom locals.
Lifestyle and Local Markets in Kampong Thom
Kampong Thom is a town not many tourists visit yet, but for me, mr.hotsia, I chose to explore deeply the local lifestyle and food here, which is quite similar to Thai cuisine in many dishes such as pork stew, sour soup, or stir-fried holy basil with Vietnamese coriander leaves. The Kampong Thom market itself is full of colors with locals buying and selling fresh produce, vegetables, fish, and various foods. I also stopped to try Khmer fish cakes wrapped in long bean leaves and shaved ice with palm sugar sold in the market, which was a fun and delicious experience.

Travel and Accommodation in Kampong Thom
For travelers interested in stopping by Kampong Thom, traveling from Siem Reap is not difficult, taking about 2 hours by bus with many departures daily. Minibuses or shared taxis from Phnom Penh are also available at similar prices, about 80-120 baht per person.
I chose to stay atStung Sen Garden Hotelwhich is near the Stung Sen River Bridge. This hotel offers wireless internet in the rooms and a peaceful atmosphere, suitable for resting before continuing to other provinces.
Summary of Experience and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

Although the price is higher than regular duck eggs, the taste and texture are definitely worth it.
