Eating Khmer Food in Kompong Thom: A Real Experience from mr.hotsia
Kompong Thom is a small province located between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. It is a city few tourists choose to stop by, but for me, mr.hotsia, visiting here for the second time was a great opportunity to absorb the local lifestyle and authentic Khmer flavors that are rarely found in typical travel books.
From the moment I stepped off the bus from Siem Reap, I felt the peacefulness and simplicity of Kompong Thom. It’s a city not as busy as the big cities but full of charm that made me want to explore the evening market where locals sell fresh produce from their gardens and rivers on the ground—fish, fresh vegetables, and many tempting foods.Kompong Thom MarketA great starting point to discover authentic Khmer flavors
Street food you can enjoy with peace of mind, flavors close to home
If you think Khmer food is completely different from ours, I must say that in Kompong Thom there are many dishes that Thai people like me can easily enjoy, especially street rice and curry dishes I tried. There’s pa lo (braised pork) similar to Thai dishes, or Khmer-style curry with a mild spice aroma, and dishes like dry stir-fry or stir-fried with cumin leaves that taste close to Thai basil stir-fry. It made me feel like eating home food in a different atmosphere.

Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish Porridge: An Unforgettable Flavor
One of the dishes that impressed me the most during this visit to Kompong Thom was “Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish Porridge,” a local dish reflecting the abundance of nearby Tonle Sap Lake. The snakehead fish here is dried and sold whole. I found a small porridge shop at the night market in front of Kompong Thom market. Dried snakehead fish hung in rows outside the shop, and the aroma of charcoal-grilled snakehead fish was irresistible.
I ordered one snakehead fish to be grilled over hot charcoal by the vendor, served with hot white porridge and a cheap red wine at the same porridge shop. This simple atmosphere is the charm of authentic Khmer food. The fish tasted slightly sweet and not too salty, reminding me of eating snakehead fish at home in my childhood.Read my story about Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish Porridgehere.
Strolling the Evening Market, Tasting Khmer Fried Fish Cakes and Shaved Ice Jow Tal
After enjoying the snakehead fish porridge, I wandered to the evening market next to the dry goods and agricultural equipment market. This market is not very large but full of life, with locals bustling about. I found Khmer fried fish cakes wrapped in long bean pods. They were crispy outside and soft inside, with a flavor unlike any fried fish cake back home—a very special experience.
I also tried Jow Tal shaved ice, a cold drink that helped cool down in Kompong Thom’s hot weather. Talking with Khmer locals and the Kompong Cham community at this market made me feel warm and gave me a deeper understanding of the local way of life.Read about Kompong Thom Marketwhere I have included photos and videos.
Accommodation and Travel: How to Prepare for a Fun Trip to Kompong Thom
Kompong Thom doesn’t have as many accommodations as big cities but offers options suitable for travelers like me. I stayed atStung Sen Garden Hotellocated near the Stung Sen River bridge. It has clean rooms, Wi-Fi in the rooms, and reasonable prices. If you like simple accommodation near the market and walking street, I highly recommend this place.
Getting to Kompong Thom is very easy. I took a bus from Siem Reap that took about 2 hours to reach the city. There are many bus trips daily, and the price is affordable. If you plan to continue to Preah Vihear, the neighboring province, you need to plan carefully because taxis directly from Siem Reap to Preah Vihear are very expensive. I chose to stay overnight in Kompong Thom to rest and experience local life before continuing my journey.Read my story about traveling in Kompong Thomwhich contains very useful details.
Summary
For me, mr.hotsia, visiting Kompong Thom is not just passing through between big cities but a chance to learn about the lifestyle and authentic Khmer flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. Street food that is easy to enjoy, Tonle Sap snakehead fish porridge with its sweet and tender fish flavor, and markets full of fresh and unique foods are what make me want to return here again.
If you want to deeply experience Khmer cuisine, try stopping by Kompong Thom. You will realize that the flavors and lifestyle here are as charming as any famous tourist city.
