Kampot Morning Market Pepper: The Charm of Black Pepper in the Heart of Kampot
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take everyone to experience the morning life of a small town in Kampot Province, Cambodia. This is not just a quiet town I have mentioned in previous articles,Travel Information for Kampot Province, Cambodiabut also a town famous for its world-class quality black pepper. Kampot pepper is truly the prized product that has built the reputation of this province.
I arrived at Kampot morning market in the cool morning air. The Chhou River flows through the center of town. The market atmosphere is lively, filled with locals and foreign tourists who come to admire the charm of Khmer life here. Kampot morning market is not just an ordinary fresh food market but also a hub for world-renowned black pepper. I couldn't resist taking out my camera to record some clips (if you're interested, you can watch the full video at this link).Kampot Morning Market Pepper, Kampot Pepper, Kampot Province, Cambodia)
Kampot Black Pepper: A Unique Flavor and Aroma
First, let me briefly explain the special qualities of Kampot black pepper. Black pepper is different from white pepper in that it is harvested before ripening and dried with the skin on, resulting in a stronger aroma and more intense flavor than white pepper. White pepper is harvested when ripe and the skin is removed, giving it a milder taste.Kampot PepperThis place is distinguished by its fragrant black pepper with a perfectly balanced spicy heat.
While walking through the market, I saw many vendors displaying large piles of black pepper, both fresh and dried. The pepper aroma filled the entire area. This market is like a center for high-quality black pepper that is sold both domestically and internationally. Some shops also sell ready-to-use ground pepper. I couldn't resist buying some to take home.
Local Life and Cuisine with Kampot Pepper
For visitors to Kampot Province, not trying local dishes cooked with Kampot black pepper is a big miss. I had the chance to enjoy chicken rice porridge at a night food stall near the Durian Monument. This place has jars of Kampot black pepper on the tables for customers to sprinkle as they like. The pepper aroma is so strong it almost floats in the air. I added plenty. The spicy heat and fragrant black pepper flavor made the hot rice porridge taste much better.Night Food Stall Durian ShakeHighly recommended to try
Besides rice porridge, Kampot pepper is also used as an ingredient in various local dishes such as Khmer dry noodles and Lok Lak (a traditional Khmer dish) that I tasted here. The spicy heat and aroma of Kampot black pepper add incredible depth to these simple dishes (if you want to see what these dishes look like and watch my eating show, click here).Khmer Dry Noodles in Kampot ProvinceandLok Lak, Kampot Province)
Travel and Pepper Farm Tour Recommendations
Kampot Province is not difficult to reach from Phnom Penh. I recommend taking an air-conditioned bus from Phnom Penh in the morning. It takes about 4-5 hours to reach Kampot town. Once there, don't forget to book a one-day tour to visit the black pepper farms. I once bought a one-day tour for only 10 USD, which included visits to pepper farms, durian orchards, and mango groves. Here, you can see the process of growing and harvesting black pepper with your own eyes, which was a very impressive experience for me.
Visiting the pepper farms not only provides knowledge about this famous local crop but also offers a chance to experience the simple and extremely friendly lifestyle of the locals. I recommend visiting Kampot Province at a relaxed pace, staying at least 3 nights to fully absorb the atmosphere and enjoy local cuisine.
Connections to Other Attractions in Kampot Province
After recharging with food and black pepper at the morning market, don't forget to visitPhnom Chhnork Cave, Kampot Provincewhich is not far from the town center. This cave contains ancient temples and beautiful natural scenery. Also, if you enjoy seaside and coastal atmospheres, you can continue on to Kep Province, which is only 50 kilometers from Kampot.
If you want to experience a romantic evening atmosphere, a sunset boat cruise on the Kampot River is another activity I really enjoy. More details can be found atKampot River Sunset Boat Cruise
