L'Klak, Kampot Province, Cambodia: Experience riverside life and authentic flavors

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you for a walk in the L'Klak area of Kampot Province, Cambodia. This is a small riverside community along the Kampot River, locally known simply as the CHHOU River, which flows through the province. I once stayed in Kampot for three nights in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere, making L'Klak a must-visit destination for those who enjoy quiet, chill travel and want to get close to real community life.

L'Klak is located not far from Kampot town. It is easily accessible by tuk-tuk or private car, passing through refreshing rice fields and fruit orchards, especially the famous Kampot black pepper. I had the chance to visit a pepper farm and taste fresh produce straight from the plant (read more aboutKampot Pepper)

Riverside Life and L'Klak Fresh Market

In L'Klak, I experienced a small lively fresh market by the river in the early morning. Locals sell fresh goods including fish, vegetables, fruits, and freshly caught seafood. This market is one of my favorite places to stroll because it shows the real lifestyle of Khmer people here. They speak the local Khmer dialect, but many can also speak some Thai, making communication easier.

The riverside atmosphere in the evening is equally impressive. A cool breeze blows, small boats float by, and locals sit fishing. It’s a scene that makes me feel completely relaxed. If interested, you can try a boat ride to watch the sunset on the river, which is another recommended activity not to miss (see more details atKampot River Sunset Boat Ride)

Taste Local Food and Delicacies in L'Klak

Regarding food in L'Klak, mr.hotsia can assure you it’s truly excellent. I tried Khmer dry noodles at a small roadside restaurant. The flavor was rich, the noodles chewy and soft, with a broth fragrant with authentic Khmer spices. For a detailed look at Khmer dry noodles, you can watch the clip I recorded.Khmer Dry Noodles in Kampot Province

Also, the night market near the Durian Monument in Kampot town is another favorite spot of mine. They serve hot chicken rice porridge with fragrant Kampot black pepper that you can add to taste (full review available atNight Market Restaurant, Durian Shake). Kampot durian is also famous. I tasted the Monthong variety, which was sweet and creamy, similar to what we have at home. Here, durians with a red tag on the stem indicate genuine Kampot durian, which durian lovers should definitely try (read more aboutKampot Durian)

Travel and Safety in L'Klak

Traveling to L'Klak and Kampot Province is very convenient. I recommend traveling from Phnom Penh by air-conditioned bus, which runs twice daily and takes about 4-5 hours. If coming from nearby provinces like Kampong Som or Sihanoukville, connecting routes are easy. Tuk-tuk drivers in Kampot can speak some Thai, making travel and communication hassle-free.

For adventure lovers, I suggest visiting Phnom Chhnork Cave, just 8 kilometers from Kampot town. This site features ancient ruins and old cave paintings, with a route passing through rural villages that have preserved their traditional way of life (full review available atPhnom Chhnork Cave, Kampot Province)
