Kampong Cham Food: The Riverside Flavors of the Mekong that mr.hotsia Must Share
Kampong Cham, a small province along the Mekong River in Cambodia, where mr.hotsia had the opportunity to closely experience the local lifestyle and authentic flavors. The simplicity yet fullness of the food here is a charm that left a lasting impression.
The town of Kampong Cham lies beside the vast Mekong River. The beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere make the riverside restaurants even more special. Especially at night, the night market near the bus station fills with locals and tourists alike, all eager to taste the bold local flavors at affordable prices.
mr.hotsia recommends that if you want to experience Kampong Cham's breakfast flavors, you should stroll through the morning market’s made-to-order food stalls. Some places offer dishes likeBay Chaor Khmer fried rice, which has become one of my favorite dishes. The uniqueness of Bay Cha lies in its balanced seasoning—not too spicy but fragrant with authentic Khmer spices. It's easy to eat and filling, perfect for starting your day before exploring the town.
For lunch and dinner, the self-service eateries around Kampong Cham market are great options. Besides the common curry rice and grilled chicken, there are Khmer-style fried noodles and Khmer-style papaya salad with flavors slightly different from those in Thailand but equally interesting. mr.hotsia once ordered a variety of self-service dishes to try at once and found that although some resemble Thai food, they have a distinct Khmer identity highlighted by local herbs.
Another highlight mr.hotsia noticed sold in many Cambodian towns including Kampong Cham is small dried snails sold in bamboo trays. Locals often enjoy snacking on them. I haven’t tried them yet due to concerns about stomach issues from a previous trip, but if you like trying unusual foods, I recommend giving them a taste—they should be delicious.
Riverside Dining and Night Market Atmosphere
In the evening, mr.hotsia enjoys walking around the night market near Kampong Cham bus station, adjacent to the riverside dining area. The atmosphere is peaceful with a cool breeze, perfect for enjoying crispy fried chicken or the locals’ spicy papaya salad. There are also freshly cooked fried noodle dishes with a variety of choices.
The Kampong Cham night market not only sells food but is also a gathering place for locals and tourists who come to shop and enjoy the food together. mr.hotsia noticed there are fresh fruit juice stalls here, especiallyDurian Smoothieswhich many people talk about. You should definitely try it once if you visit.
Travel and Accommodation Recommended by mr.hotsia
Kampong Cham is easily accessible from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh by bus operated by Soraya Company, a major company covering domestic routes and connections to Laos. mr.hotsia regularly uses this route because it is convenient and safe.
Most accommodations in Kampong Cham are located along the Mekong River. There are 3-4 hotels starting at just 13 USD, which is very affordable considering the atmosphere and views. I stayed atMariya Hotelwhich is located right on the Mekong River. The rooms have Wi-Fi and the prices suit backpackers’ budgets. Although some rooms may have issues with mosquitoes or water systems that need checking before staying, overall it is worth it.
Experience Lifestyle and Culture Through Food
mr.hotsia believes that eating is the best way to learn about culture. Kampong Cham not only offers distinctive food flavors but also reflects the simple and warm lifestyle of the Khmer people. The morning fresh market is full of colors from vendors selling fresh seafood from the Mekong River, as well as local snacks likeKudichin Portuguese Cakewhich has an interesting history. Although I haven’t tried it myself, I recommend fellow travelers to explore and taste it.
