Using Mobile Phones and 3G in Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia with mr.hotsia
When I, mr.hotsia, traveled to Banteay Meanchey province, also known by many as “Banteay Meanchey,” with its capital at Sisophon, not far from the Thai border at Poipet, to follow historical trails and experience the lifestyle of the Khmer people in this area. One thing I focused on was using mobile phones and internet during the trip because communication abroad can be very difficult without proper preparation.
For travelers planning to visit or do business in Banteay Meanchey, I’d like to share my personal experience as mr.hotsia on using 3G and sharing WiFi via my Android phone.
Cambodian 3G SIM Cards Made Simple
My experience with 3G SIM cards in Cambodia is buying prepaid SIMs from local providers, preferably in big cities like Sisophon, because staff there usually speak English, and sometimes Thai speakers assist. This is very important because buying SIMs at some border areas can be confusing, and staff might not understand your needs or test the signal before use.
Buying prepaid SIMs in Cambodia is very affordable. Domestic calls and calls back to Thailand are cost-effective. Importantly, I used an old Samsung phone like the Galaxy Mini, which still supports 3G well, allowing me to make calls and use the internet for maps or information searches comfortably in Sisophon.
Using Dual SIM Phones Makes Travel Easier
I carry two phones. The first is a dual SIM phone with a Thai SIM for roaming in case of urgent calls from home, and a Cambodian prepaid SIM for local calls to hotels, taxis, or restaurants, which is much cheaper than roaming. The other phone uses a Cambodian Android SIM dedicated to 3G internet, perfect for map apps and finding attractions in Sisophon and the province.
Anyone who has traveled through this province knows Sisophon is an important city where vehicles pass through to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. Using these two phones made my travel very convenient, avoiding getting lost or being overcharged by local taxis or tuk-tuks because I had all the information on hand.
Sharing WiFi with Android Phones: Easy and Cost-Effective
For travelers in groups, I recommend a simple trick I often use: enabling WiFi sharing (Mobile Hotspot) on any Android phone that supports it. This feature lets other phones or laptops connect to the internet directly through our 3G SIM.
I use an older Samsung with Android OS to share WiFi with friends. It’s very convenient and saves money because you don’t need multiple SIMs—just one 3G SIM is enough. You can also set the WiFi name and password as you like, so security is not a concern.
Simple setup steps: go to the menuSettings > WIFI > Tethering and Portable Hotspot > Mobile APThen turn it on, set the WiFi name and password, and other phones or laptops can immediately use the internet through your phone.
Be careful that WiFi sharing only works when your phone is connected directly to the internet via your 3G SIM. If you connect to another WiFi and then share it, it won’t work because the phone cannot rebroadcast the signal (no repeater function).
Why Buy SIMs in Big Cities Like Sisophon?
I once tried buying a SIM at the border but faced communication problems and difficulties activating the SIM. It was not as smooth as buying in a big city like Sisophon, where staff speak some Thai and English, test the signal, and teach you how to use it immediately, avoiding confusion with Khmer language menus on the phone.

Summary of Mobile Phone and 3G Usage Experience in Banteay Meanchey
Overall, for mr.hotsia, traveling in Cambodia and Banteay Meanchey province, preparing two phones with Thai and Cambodian prepaid SIMs is a perfect idea. It helps communicate with locals at low call costs, use 3G internet for maps, and share WiFi with friends to save money.
