Poipet, the Cambodian border town well-known to Thai people as a casino city
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the real atmosphere of Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. It is a border town familiar to Thai people, especially casino travelers who often come here to try their luck. Poipet is located next to Siem Reap Province, another important destination for tourists visiting Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, and it is also a gateway to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
What makes Poipet stand out and well-known among Thai tourists is that it is home to several large casinos located right on the Cambodian border. Just after stamping out of Thailand, you can already see rows of casinos side by side, making it very convenient and quick for travelers to come and gamble without having to travel deep into Cambodia.
Atmosphere and Accommodation in Poipet
Most accommodations in Poipet are hotels with integrated casinos, allowing casino visitors to stay conveniently in one place. There are several standard hotels to choose from, but for budget travelers, there are also guesthouses priced reasonably from 400-500 baht per night. Although options are limited, they suit travelers who want to save on expenses.
Regarding food, I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying meals inside the casinos because many offer buffets with a variety of dishes at affordable prices, around 200 baht per person, which is good value for the quantity and taste. Additionally, there are restaurants around the casinos offering Khmer and Thai food if you want to experience simple local flavors.
Transportation and Currency Exchange
Tourists traveling to Poipet can conveniently use bus services from the Poipet bus station, with routes to major cities such as Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. However, the most popular and easiest option for tourists is to useshared taxiswhich are taxis that wait until full before departing. The standard price I found in 2011 was about 300 baht per person to Siem Reap.
After passing immigration and stamping into Cambodia, someone will approach you about shared taxis. Tourists can negotiate the price every time. Although there is a standard rate, bargaining helps get a fairer and better deal.
Regarding currency exchange, Poipet offers exchange services, but from my experience, the rates are not very good. It is better to exchange money in Thailand beforehand, especially at Thai banks near Rong Ruea, which open at 10 AM—too late for early travelers. Planning ahead for currency exchange is recommended.
Connection with Banteay Meanchey Province and Sisophon City
Poipet is part of Banteay Meanchey Province, sometimes jokingly called "Ban Tai Mee Chai" by Thai people. This province has historical ties with Thailand, similar to Sisophon, the provincial capital, which is only 40 kilometers from Poipet.
For those interested in traveling beyond Poipet, Sisophon is an interesting stopover with a quiet town atmosphere and simple Khmer lifestyle. Many restaurants in this town speak Thai because locals have long been familiar with the language, and the menus are very similar to Thai cuisine. To learn more about local Khmer food, I recommend reading the articleFood of Sisophon City, Banteay Meanchey Provincethat I have written.
Additionally, Sisophon is an important transit point for travelers going from Poipet to Siem Reap or the southern Tonle Sap area. Travel is convenient with regular bus and shuttle services. For those interested in accommodation in Sisophon, there are budget hotels with basic amenities. You can read more atHotels in Sisophon City, Banteay Meanchey Province
Tips and Experiences from mr.hotsia
From my experience traveling to Poipet several times, I recommend preparing your money and communication tools well. Mobile signal and internet in Cambodia are decent. If you use an Android phone or older smartphones supporting 3G/4G, you can easily buy a prepaid Cambodian SIM card. Call and internet rates are affordable and very convenient for contacting taxis or asking for information.Read more details about using mobile phones in Cambodia
