Travel to Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia: Routes and Lifestyles You Must Experience
When talking about Banteay Meanchey Province, many people may be more familiar with the border town of Poipet, which is adjacent to Thailand. This province is located in the northwest of Cambodia. The capital city is Sisophon (also known as Serei Saophoan), which many people do not realize is the heart of Banteay Meanchey Province, rich with cultural diversity and history.
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to this province and want to share my real experiences without exaggeration. This province was once part of Thailand during King Rama V's reign under the name Phibunsongkhram Province before being transferred to France and later incorporated into Battambang Province of Cambodia. This historical background is still reflected in the lifestyle and culture, blending Thai and Khmer influences in an interesting way.
Poipet: A Unique Gateway and Bustling City
I started from Poipet, a border town next to the Rong Kluea Market on the Thai side. This is a well-known crossing point for Thai travelers, especially those wanting to visit casinos in Cambodia. Poipet is a lively city with many casinos attracting tourists from Thailand and abroad. Besides casinos, many restaurants in Poipet accept Thai baht directly, making it convenient for Thai tourists.
Traveling around Poipet, you can clearly see it is more developed and modern than other areas in Banteay Meanchey Province. However, if you want to experience the rural atmosphere and traditional Khmer lifestyle, I recommend traveling to remote districts such as Mongkol Borei or Phnom Srok, where dirt roads remain and oxen are still used for farming as in the past.
Sisophon: The Capital Full of Life and Stories
From Poipet, I traveled to Sisophon, the capital city of Banteay Meanchey Province, about 40 kilometers away. This city may not be as bustling as Poipet but has its own charm that I really like. It is a city of education with several universities and an important transit point for travelers heading to other provinces in Cambodia.
In Sisophon, I experienced a clear blend of Thai and Khmer cultures because many people speak Thai, and many restaurants play Thai TV. I tried local dishes similar to Thai food, such as plain rice porridge popular at night and Bobor Sa made from gently grilled snakehead fish. There are also karaoke bars and clubs suitable for relaxing at night.

Transportation and Accommodation in Banteay Meanchey
Traveling in this province is not difficult because from Poipet there are various bus lines passing through Sisophon and continuing to other provinces such as Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Battambang. I used a shuttle bus service that was comfortable and affordable.
Accommodation in Sisophon is limited and mostly inexpensive. I stayed in a hotel costing about 300 baht per night with air conditioning, hot water, and WIFI. It was also close to the morning market and bus station, making it convenient for traveling and finding food in the morning and evening. Rural Lifestyle and the Future of Banteay Meanchey
I had the chance to talk with Khmer people who travel to work in Thailand. They said many areas in Banteay Meanchey still face hardship, with no electricity, dirt roads, and most people still using oxen for farming. Although young people choose to work in Bangkok, the elderly stay home and take care of grandchildren. It is a simple and warm way of life.
This province is also the gateway to Preah Vihear Province, which has historical tourist sites like Preah Vihear Temple. I plan to visit there in the future to explore the beauty and stories from the Khmer side that are still little known to Thai people. Stay tuned for my next article on mr.hotsia.
