Hotels in Serei Sophorn City, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia
Hello, I am mr.hotsia sharing a true story from my trip passing through and staying in Serei Sophorn City, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. This city may not be very prominent in the eyes of Thai tourists as it is a transit town between Poipet and Siem Reap. But for me, it has something intriguing and an atmosphere that is not as hectic as the big cities in Cambodia.
As many may not know, Serei Sophorn is the capital city of Banteay Meanchey Province, which was once part of Thailand's Phibunsongkhram Province before being transferred to French administration during King Rama V's reign. This place has an interesting cultural blend, especially in food, which is very similar to Thai cuisine (if you want to know more about the local food in depth, check out the articleFood and Cuisine of Serei Sophorn City, Banteay Meanchey Province.)
Accommodation in Serei Sophorn: Affordable and Comfortable
When I traveled in August 2012, I noticed that hotels or accommodations in Serei Sophorn are not as numerous as in major tourist cities, but it was not difficult to find a place to stay. Room prices were about 300 baht per night, which is cheap compared to Battambang or other cities in Cambodia. Most rooms have air conditioning, WIFI, and hot water. Although the city roads were under construction (a bit dusty), the hotel I stayed at was close to the morning market and bus station, so I could easily walk to the market and at night there were roadside rice porridge stalls within walking distance.
I don’t clearly remember the hotel name because it was hard to pronounce, but if anyone wants to stay at the same place as me, you can click to see the hotel location onGoogle Maps. These hotels are ideal for travelers seeking convenience and budget prices.
Hotel Surroundings and Transportation
In Serei Sophorn, transportation is very convenient. If you come from Poipet, which is only 40 kilometers away, you must pass through this city before heading to Siem Reap or Battambang. The city is not very large but has many public buses passing through and it is easy to transfer to other destinations.
I chose to stay in an area within a few minutes’ walk to the morning market. The morning market here is where locals buy fresh goods, food, and fruits. It’s a lifestyle scene I really like because it’s not crowded and you can clearly see the local life perspective (if you want to know the Serei Sophorn market in depth, try reading the articleSerei Sophorn Marketfor better understanding).
Food Around the Accommodation and Nightlife
Speaking of food, I recommend trying the local dishes such as white rice porridge or Bobor Sor, which are local specialties of Serei Sophorn. Especially if you eat them with gently grilled snakehead fish and sip cold beer as the locals do, you will get the authentic atmosphere and taste of this city. There are also many made-to-order food stalls in town, popular with locals. I stopped for dinner at one of these places before heading to a roadside rice porridge stall. This kind of atmosphere made me feel like I was truly with the locals (you can read about the food here in the articleFood and Cuisine of Serei Sophorn City, Banteay Meanchey Province)
). If you enjoy nightlife in Serei Sophorn, there are hotel nightclubs in the city center to choose from, or if you want karaoke, you can drive about 3 kilometers out to find karaoke bars recommended by locals.
What to Prepare and Mobile Phone Tips
Using mobile phones here is not complicated. For me, mr.hotsia, I used a Cambodian prepaid SIM card that is cheap and works very well with 3G/4G. Sharing WIFI from my phone to friends was also very easy. If anyone wants more information on this, I recommend reading the articleMobile Phone Usage, 3G Usage, and WIFI Sharing with Android in Cambodiathat I wrote.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Serei Sophorn does not have the vibrancy or luxury of big tourist cities, but its simplicity, cheap accommodation, complete basic amenities, and the friendliness of the locals impressed me greatly. This place is suitable for those who want to experience the real lifestyle of northwestern Cambodia and for travelers who want a relaxed stay. It is a good stopover between famous tourist cities like Siem Reap or Poipet.
If anyone plans to travel this route, don’t forget to stop and stay in Serei Sophorn and experience the atmosphere I, mr.hotsia, have shared in this article. I guarantee you will have a different and memorable experience.
