Backpacking India 44/129: Boiled Egg Sandwich Journey from Gangtok to Namchi, Sikkim
When talking about traveling in Sikkim, a small northern state of India that still amazingly preserves its purity and nature, the journey from the capital Gangtok to Namchi is a route that Mr.Hotsia must say is filled with simplicity but full of the charm of rural life and unique culture.
One morning in Gangtok, after resting for 2 nights in the city connected to the rest of India via Highway 31A, Mr.Hotsia recommends checking the map on Google Maps beforehand for certainty because this route can be winding and steep in typical mountain style. However, traveling by local jeep here is a very fun experience and truly immerses you in the real life of the locals.
Before departure, Mr.Hotsia stopped to buy a boiled egg sandwich from a small shop in the Gangtok market. It is a simple food suitable for backpacking because the aroma of spices and the firm boiled egg give a warm feeling to carry along the way.
As the jeep moved out of Gangtok, the views on both sides were high mountains and green fields dotted with small villages where locals live simply. The jeep carried some locals, some spoke Nepali, some Hindi, but everyone had friendly smiles. This journey was not just a change of place but a true experience of Sikkim's culture and lifestyle, which is not crowded with tourists like big cities.
Namchi, meaning "High Sky" in the local language, is the main town of South Sikkim. It is located over 1,600 meters above sea level, offering a cool atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas. Mr.Hotsia chose to stay near Central Park in the heart of Namchi. This place is not only a gathering point for people but also a center of tourism and religion in Sikkim.
In Namchi, tourists will find a prominent large Buddha statue and temples that remain ancient and serene, reflecting the harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures in the town. Mr.Hotsia strolled through a small market selling fresh local produce, fruits, and must-try street food like momo (dumplings filled with vegetables or pork) made fresh. Of course, the boiled egg sandwich he carried became a snack that recharged him for the journey ahead.
Traveling in Sikkim mostly uses shared jeeps or local buses that run between towns such as Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi, and Siliguri, which connects to Bagdogra Airport. Although the roads are winding and some parts are under repair, the natural and simple travel experience made Mr.Hotsia feel like returning to a slow life and truly experiencing the local way.
