Backpacking India 45/129: Enjoying Fried Chicken and Chowmein in Sikkim
When talking about Sikkim (SIKKIM), a small northern state of India bordering the Himalayas, many people think of beautiful nature, temples, and a peaceful atmosphere. But for me, mr.hotsia, this trip opened a new world of food that can be described as "eating with satisfaction" without much seasoning, especially fried chicken and Chowmein. This is a destination you should not miss.
Sikkim is a state with a landscape completely different from southern India or big cities like Delhi. It is located at a high altitude, with cool weather all year round. Most of the population speaks local languages such as Nepali and Sikkimese, blending the Lepcha way of life and Tibetan culture harmoniously. I started my journey in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which is the main connection point to other cities and Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal state, not far away.Read the travel story to GangtokBefore heading to Namchi and Pelling to experience the authentic local atmosphere
Sikkim-style Fried Chicken: The Perfect Balance of Crispiness and Rich Flavor
In Namchi, the main town of South Sikkim, I found a small restaurant that seemed ordinary but served fried chicken that made me stop and taste. The skin was fried to a golden crisp, biting into tender, juicy chicken with a rich flavor from unique local spices. This is not typical fast food fried chicken but a carefully prepared dish using fresh local ingredients.
I ordered this fried chicken with Chowmein, an Indian-style fried noodle dish very different from others. Thin noodles stir-fried with vegetables and a special Sikkim sauce, the flavor is mild, slightly spicy, and fragrant with herbs. Eating it, I thought about the lifestyle here, connected with nature and diverse cultures — Lepcha, Nepali, and Buddhist people living together harmoniously.
Markets and Lifestyle: Experience the Charm of Sikkim through Food and People
After a satisfying meal, I strolled through Namchi market bustling with locals and tourists. The market is full of fresh produce, fruits, and exotic spices not easily found in other Indian cities. I met a vendor selling fresh vegetables and local herbs who shared how they grow crops in highland areas and the importance of environmental conservation in this region.
In the evening, I traveled to Pelling, another important tourist town in West Sikkim. Here, the views of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga peak are breathtaking. I stayed at a small homestay and talked with the Buddhist host family. They explained that life here depends mainly on nature and agriculture but welcomes tourists who want to experience the purity of the Himalayan land.Read the homestay story in PellingTo gain a deeper understanding of life here
Traveling in Sikkim: Jeep Rides and Routes Connecting Towns
Traveling in Sikkim is an exciting and challenging experience due to the mountainous roads. Most transportation is by shared jeeps. I tried jeep rides from Gangtok to Namchi and then to Pelling, each route feeling like an adventure surrounded by nature.
National Highway 31A is the main route connecting Gangtok with other towns, including Siliguri in West Bengal, which is the gateway to Bagdogra Airport, convenient for international tourists.Read the full backpacking review of SikkimTo prepare before your trip
Summary: Sikkim is not just mountains and temples but also unforgettable fried chicken
Many may see Sikkim as just a destination for nature lovers and pilgrims, but for mr.hotsia, tasting authentic Sikkim fried chicken and Chowmein opened a new perspective on traveling here. Simple dishes full of flavor and local care are charms that make me want to return.
If you have a chance to visit Sikkim, don’t forget to try Sikkim fried chicken and Chowmein at small shops in Namchi market or roadside stalls in Pelling. The crispy outside, tender inside fried chicken and the balanced flavor of fried noodles will surely captivate you as they did me.
