When talking about Sikkim, a small northern state of India that I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to, I can say it’s not only about the unique nature and culture but also the charm of local cuisine that is truly worth tasting. Especially if you visitNamchilocated in South Sikkim, I can assure you that the deliciousness and variety of Indian food here will leave you unforgettable.

My journey started from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, which connects to other towns via all-weather highways and shared jeeps that serve as the main lifeline of the region. From Gangtok, I rested for two nights and then took a shared jeep to travel to Namchi.Namchi is located in the southern part of Sikkim, about 78 kilometers away.

Namchi, which means 'high sky' in the local language, is situated over 1,600 meters above sea level. The atmosphere here is cool and comfortable, perfect for strolling and exploring the lively local market throughout the day. I didn’t miss the chance to head straight to the central fresh market, where fresh vegetables, fruits, and spices are continuously sold.

At Namchi market, various Indian vegetables that are uncommon in our country are common here, such as purple cabbage, large and crisp bok choy, and local salad greens with a slightly sour and bitter taste. Locals use these vegetables to make Indian vegetable salad, which is spicy with local spices. The dressing mixed with fresh lime, dried chili, and Himalayan salt creates a unique flavor, especially when eaten with hot steamed rice, it’s just perfect.

When it comes to must-try dishes in Namchi, it’s the 'Spiced Fried Chicken,' known for the aroma of carefully prepared spices. I followed the fragrant scent of fried spice powder throughout the market and found a small shop where the owner makes homemade fried chicken with a unique rich flavor. Large chicken pieces are coated thoroughly with spices, fried crispy on the outside and tender inside, served with a spicy local chili sauce. I can only say it was absolutely delicious.

Eating in Namchi is not just about food but also experiencing the lifestyle of the Sikkimese people here. Most locals speak a mix of Nepali, Hindi, and English. The market vendors are friendly and always smiling. I exchanged cultural stories with them while learning how to use local spices and ingredients in cooking.

The atmosphere in Namchi is not only about food and markets but also features interesting cultural and natural attractions, such as the giant Buddha statue, a key landmark of the town, and Central Park, ideal for a relaxing walk before or after meals. There are also homestays available to stay with locals for an authentic local lifestyle experience. If you want to know Namchi more deeply, I recommend reading about homestays in Namchithat I have written before.

For those interested in traveling around various towns in Sikkim, I suggest planning your trip carefully because most roads in Sikkim are mountainous and winding. Using shared jeeps here is common and very convenient, especially if you want to continue from Namchi toPellingor return to Siliguri for further travel within India, which is easy and convenient.

In summary, tasting authentic Indian food in Namchi, Sikkim, is an experience that I, mr.hotsia, deeply cherish. Whether it’s the fresh and tangy Indian vegetable salad, the richly flavored spiced fried chicken with its enticing aroma, or even chatting with locals and soaking in the market atmosphere, I believe if you have the chance to visit Sikkim, don’t forget to stop by Namchi and try the food here. I guarantee you will be impressed and never forget it.
