Backpacking India 53/129: Freshly Squeezed to Boil Nepali Milk Tea - Nepali Morning Life in Sikkim, India

Hello, I ammr.hotsiawith a new journey in the state of Sikkim, India, a land that perfectly blends Nepali, Tibetan, and Indian cultures. Today, I will take you to experience the morning life of the Nepali people in Sikkim through street scenes I encountered in Namchi, one of the key towns in South Sikkim. This is the start of a new day filled with the aroma of Nepali milk tea and familiar local conversations.

Early Morning in Namchi with Freshly Squeezed Nepali Milk Tea

One morning in Namchi, I woke up early to explore a small street filled with shops and Nepali milk tea stalls lit by dim lights, with kettles boiling vigorously. I saw Nepali women squeezing fresh milk tea from small plastic bags into pots, carefully adding spices and sugar. The air was filled with the fragrant aroma of tea all around. I couldn’t help but stop and order a hot cup of milk tea.

The Nepali milk tea here is different from the tea I’ve tasted in central or southern India because it contains various spices and is slightly sweetened, mixed with the richness of fresh milk squeezed directly from bags. This creates a smooth and warm flavor, perfect for Sikkim’s cool morning weather.

The Lifestyle of Nepali People in Sikkim

Namchi is not only a town with delicious milk tea but also a center of the Nepali community in Sikkim, where most residents are of Nepali descent. Locals speak a mix of Nepali, English, and Hindi. I walked through the bustling morning market filled with bargaining voices over fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods sold at affordable prices.

Many families in Namchi still live simply, with wooden houses and pointed roofs typical of mountain architecture. I spoke with a milk tea vendor who told me, "Nepali milk tea is like the start of a new day for all of us. It warms the body and prepares us for the day ahead." This sentence made me feel closer to the lifestyle of the people here.

Journey to Sikkim and Namchi, the Mountain Town

For those who want to follow my path, you can travel to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which is the gateway to various towns in the state.Traveling to Gangtok, Sikkim, Indiais convenient via Highway 31A connecting to Siliguri in West Bengal, near Bagdogra Airport. From there, I chose to take a local jeep from Gangtok to Namchi, a 2-3 hour journey along winding roads through beautiful mountains.

Namchi is located at an altitude of 1,675 meters above sea level, with a cool climate year-round. The Himalayas stand prominently in the background. It is also the center of the Nepali community, with a lively morning market that allowed me to truly experience the locals.

Tasting Food and Listening to Nepali Songs on Namchi Streets

Besides the Nepali milk tea I loved, I also tried local food from street stalls, such as fried rice with a rich flavor and fragrant spices. I listened to traditional Nepali folk songs sung softly by a street singer. This made the morning atmosphere in Sikkim vibrant and warm, which you can see in my video atFreshly Squeezed to Boil Nepali Milk Tea - Nepali Morning Life in Sikkim

Connecting and Exploring Nearby Towns

After spending time experiencing life in Namchi, I didn’t miss the chance to travel to Pelling, located in western Sikkim. It is a popular town for travelers wanting to see the Himalayas and Kangchenjunga peak.Pelling, Western Sikkim, IndiaIt has pristine nature and warm homestays with local families.Dahlap Homestay, Pellingwhich I have recommended as a great choice for those wanting to experience authentic culture and nature.

For those interested in staying in Namchi itself, I recommend checking outHomestays with Local Families in NamchiandRecommended Hotels in Namchifor convenience and a richer experience.

Summary of the Journey and Impressions

Waking up early in Namchi and experiencing the Nepali lifestyle that preserves traditional culture so well through a hot cup of freshly squeezed Nepali milk tea is a memory thatmr.hotsiawill remember for a long time. I invite everyone who loves deep travel to truly experience the real life of the people here, not just pass through like ordinary tourists.

Sikkim is a small state full of cultural diversity and beautiful nature. It is not just a destination but a journey that teaches us the true meaning of living each day. If you want to start your day with the aroma of Nepali tea and the laughter of a warm community, I think you must visit Namchi, Sikkim at least once.
