Backpacking India 55/129: Napali traditional food - Enjoy a hearty Nepali breakfast in Sikkim, India
When talking about Nepali breakfast in Sikkim, India, many might just think of plain porridge or simple bread, but for me, Mr.Hotsia, tasting the traditional local Nepali breakfast in Sikkim is like opening a door to a new world of rich and profound flavors and culture beyond expectations.
Sikkim, a small state in northern India bordering Nepal and Tibet, has a high cultural diversity, especially the Nepali people who form the majority of the population here. I traveled from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, via road 31A connecting to Siliguri in West Bengal, then took a jeep to Namchi, the main town of South Sikkim with a warm and peaceful atmosphere.Journey to GangtokandNamchi townwas the starting point that truly allowed me to experience the Nepali breakfast in Sikkim.
The simplicity yet depth of Nepali breakfast
One morning in Namchi, I woke up in a small homestay owned by a native Nepali family. The aroma of local breakfast wafted to my nose. I followed the scent to a small kitchen filled with fresh local ingredients and spices. The host invited me to sit at an old wooden table with a bright smile.
On the breakfast table was "Thukpa," a noodle soup with fresh vegetables and a bit of meat, perfectly balanced with mild spiciness, followed by "Momo," Nepali-style steamed dumplings filled with vegetables and seasoned pork, served with a spicy chili sauce that paired unbelievably well.
There was also "Sel roti," a ring-shaped fried bread made from glutinous rice flour, crispy outside and soft inside, eaten with honey or homemade chili sauce. I tasted it and felt the crunchy texture and the rustic sweet aroma that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Lifestyle and flavors hidden in the food
What makes the Nepali breakfast in Sikkim special is not just the taste but the story behind each dish. Mr.Hotsia had the chance to talk with the homestay owner who shared that every dish reflects the lifestyle of the Nepali people here, relying on nature and local ingredients such as fresh vegetables from their backyard garden, home-raised meat, and locally grown spices.
In Namchi, traveling by shared jeep between towns made it convenient for me to explore the morning market and fresh food sources here. The morning market in Namchi is bustling with vendors selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods. I tried the local fruits that were sweet and fresh, as well as sweets made from milk and natural honey.
Connecting with other towns in Sikkim and Nepali culture
After enjoying the Nepali breakfast in Namchi, I, Mr.Hotsia, had the opportunity to continue my journey to Pelling, located in western Sikkim. There, I experienced the culture and local food from another perspective.Dahlap Homestay, Pelling townis a great resting point for travelers wanting to experience the Buddhist and Nepali lifestyle in western Sikkim, with a close-up view of the beautiful Himalayan mountains.
Traveling in Sikkim mostly involves shared jeeps between towns, which allowed me, Mr.Hotsia, to meet and talk with locals, including drivers and passengers. This helped me understand the lifestyle and culture of the Nepali people in this region better, whether it’s about farming, festivals, or even seasonal and regional variations in food menus.
A unique hearty eating experience
If you ask me what the charm of Nepali breakfast in Sikkim is, the answer is not just the taste but the feeling of eating food made with heart, simple yet full of flavor, and the warmth from the people who are ready to share their culture through that dish.
Imagine one morning in Namchi, after the cool mountain air of Sikkim wakes you up, escaping the hustle of big cities, then sitting down to eat local breakfast with a Nepali family who generously welcomes travelers like me. That is a memory I, Mr.Hotsia, will never forget.
If you want to experience the true flavors of Sikkim and deeply understand the life of Nepali people in India, I recommend planning a trip toBackpacking Sikkimand start your day with breakfast in Namchi.
