Backpacking India 57/129: Delicious Crispy Fried Alu Momo eating alu momo in Namchi SIKKIM

When talking about Namchi in South Sikkim, India, many might think of a peaceful tourist destination filled with grand temples or lush green nature surrounding the area. But for mr.hotsia, Namchi is not only about the scenery and culture worth studying. One thing that impressed me so much I had to stop eating to share is the “fried alu momo,” a local dish with a flavor so satisfying it must be told.

My journey to Namchi started from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, connected to outside the state via Highway 31A. I have taken a shared jeep from Gangtok to Namchi before. The trip is not as difficult as you might think if you prepare well. You can read travel details in the articleTraveling to Gangtok, Sikkim, Indiathat I wrote earlier.

Namchi is located at over 1,600 meters above sea level, making the weather cool and pleasant all year round. Although a small town, it has cultural diversity and a lively local market. I chose to stay near Central Park in the city center, convenient for walking around and tasting street food here.

Fried Alu Momo, a local dish you should try

Momo is a Nepalese-Tibetan style dumpling widely popular in Sikkim. But in Namchi, I tried the “fried alu momo,” which is different and immediately became my favorite. Alu means potato. Fried momo is a dumpling filled with seasoned mashed potatoes, wrapped in thin crispy dough, fried until golden and crispy outside but soft inside, topped with a chili sauce that is flavorful but not too spicy. This creates a perfect balance of crispy, fragrant, creamy, and mildly spicy textures.

I found this fried momo stall in Namchi market near Central Park, a gathering spot for locals and tourists. For just a few dozen rupees, I got a plate of fried alu momo that felt like eating at a friend’s home. The freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the Nepali vendor made every bite warm and satisfying.

Besides fried alu momo, Namchi also offers other momo varieties, both steamed and fried, such as chicken momo, vegetable momo, and hot momo soup that warms you up in the morning. But for mr.hotsia, fried alu momo is the champion here.

Tasting while strolling in Namchi

After recharging with my favorite fried alu momo, I walked around Namchi market full of colors and local culture. Here you can find fresh vegetables, exotic fruits from Sikkim, as well as spices and herbs hard to find elsewhere. This market reflects the simple lifestyle of villagers who still preserve their traditions well.

While walking, I heard Nepali songs from a street singer that enlivened the atmosphere. This reminded me of a Nepali street music video in Sikkim that I once recorded.Piring Fried Rice, a Nepali song from a street singer in Sikkimwhich greatly enhanced the travel experience.

Namchi in the context of Sikkim

Namchi is the main town of South Sikkim, important culturally and for tourism. It is located about 78 kilometers from Gangtok, the state capital, and not far from Siliguri in West Bengal, the main transit point most travelers use to enter and exit Sikkim. Travel within Sikkim, such as between Namchi, Gangtok, or Pelling, mostly uses shared jeeps that are quite convenient and accessible.

For those who want to deeply experience Sikkimese life, I recommend reading the articleHomestay with locals in Namchi, South Sikkim, Indiathat I wrote, which offers a different perspective on life and culture than typical tours.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s impressions

Visiting Namchi this time made me feel the diversity of Sikkim beyond just beautiful nature or grand religious sites. It also has local food with bold and unique flavors like fried alu momo, which is hard to find elsewhere.

For travelers wanting to truly taste local flavors, Namchi, Sikkim is a destination not to be missed. And if you want to know Sikkim from a deeper angle, I recommend readingBackpacking Sikkim, Indiawhere I share detailed experiences and travel tips.
