Backpacking India 61/129: Nepali Girl Harvesting Corn in Sikkim Nepali Corn Farm

Sikkim, a small state in northern India surrounded by the Himalayas, may seem like just a tiny spot on the map, but for travelers like me, mr.hotsia, Sikkim is a land full of stories and fascinating life, especially with the Nepali people here who play an important role in the lifestyle and culture of Sikkim.

This time I traveled from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, which is a convenient connection point to other cities via Highway 31A linking to Siliguri, a city in West Bengal state with the region's main airport. I rested for two nights in Gangtok before continuing by jeep to Namchi, a city famous as the center of South Sikkim. From there, I had the opportunity to visit a Nepali girl's corn harvesting farm in a small village full of warmth and the simplicity of rural life.

Namchi, which means “High Sky,” is located at over 1,600 meters above sea level. It is a great stop for tourists to experience the lifestyle of South Sikkim locals, including the Nepali people who make up the majority of the population here. I stayed in a small homestay near Central Park, the heart of Namchi, allowing me to get close to the locals and hear real daily life stories.

The Lifestyle of a Nepali Girl Harvesting Corn

One morning, I followed a Nepali girl from the village to the cornfields, which are the main food source and income for this community. Corn harvesting in Sikkim is not just an ordinary agricultural activity but part of a long-standing cultural tradition. The Nepali girl I met had a bright smile despite working hard under the sun and cold mountain air. She skillfully harvested corn pods while telling me about the importance of corn in daily life. Here, corn is used both for food and trade in local markets.

The corn farm here is not just a food source but also reflects a deep relationship between people and nature. Using traditional farming methods with minimal chemicals makes the corn sweet, fragrant, and fresh. I, mr.hotsia, tried the fresh corn she had just harvested. Its sweet and crisp taste is unique and cannot be found elsewhere.

The Charm of Sikkim Through mr.hotsia's Eyes

Sikkim is not only known for its beautiful nature and towering Himalayan peaks but also rich in Nepali culture perfectly blended with the simple agricultural community atmosphere. I, mr.hotsia, traveled from Namchi to Pelling in West Sikkim, which is not far away (Read about Pelling) where I experienced the pure nature of forests and mountains with a clear view of the Kanchenjunga peak.

Throughout the journey, I chose to use local jeep services, which are the main mode of transportation in Sikkim. These vehicles take you up and down mountains and valleys along winding roads that are sometimes challenging but full of beautiful scenery. Sikkim is peaceful and distinctly different from big Indian cities like Siliguri or Gangtok (Read about Gangtok)

Fresh Market and Local Food in the Village

After returning from the farm, I did not miss stopping by the village fresh market to buy fresh vegetables and fruits from the locals. The market is full of colors and smiles from the locals who warmly welcome travelers like me, mr.hotsia. Most vegetables and fruits are grown locally. Local products such as corn, wild fruits, and spices are neatly displayed for sale.

Regarding food in Namchi and surrounding areas, most dishes are spicy and cooked with fresh spices. I tried local dishes like Nepali fried rice and curry made from fresh local vegetables. They were so delicious I had to ask the shop owner for the recipe (Read about Namchi food)

Summary from mr.hotsia

Experiencing the lifestyle of a Nepali girl harvesting corn in Sikkim allowed me, mr.hotsia, to see a new perspective of India—not just big cities or famous tourist spots but the real life of people deeply connected to nature and culture.

If you love backpacking and want to experience the simplicity of rural life in the Himalayan region, Sikkim is an answer not to be missed, especially if you travel as I did, connecting through Gangtok, Namchi, and Pelling, each with its own charm and impressive stories.

Don't forget to plan your trip well, use the various jeep services available, and open your heart to fully experience the people and nature. I guarantee this experience will be one of your unforgettable memories.
